Vitamin D important for Adults as well as children.

www.standard.co.uk/news/health/rickets-is-on-its-way-back-warn-doctors-8414073.html

According to UK Drs, Rickets not see since the 1800s could be making a comeback. Kids today spend more time indoors with digital games and TV than outside playing and getting Vitamin D. Adults are being very cautious and cutting down on sun exposure by using sunscreen blocking out the chances of getting enough sun exposure to manufacture Vitamin D.

Lack of Vitamin D is thought to play a significant part in cause of MS, cancers, Osteoporosis.

Should all adults and children be tested for Vitamin D levels routinely to ensure individuals have high enough levels to prevent diseases occurring? We may think ours are good until a test reveals they are very low, I think so but others may disagree?

Seems Vit. D has been underrated V. We have taken a multi and one Vit. D a day for yonks :)  but took Big Val's advice and upped it to two a day.

..

So difficult re the sun isn't it. Like not eating eggs and avocado then both good for us and oh just SO many good for us, bad for us, back to good and then back to bad and it goes on and on with it almost a daily thing to read what we have been doing re health is bad or good who knows it is SO difficult and the exprts seem as confused as us.

Just an update to dose of Vitamin D 3.

Here it is 400-800 summer-winter and in America it is 4000-8000 same and harvard School of Medicine checks out for that dose ok?

I notice that in the states as well as the UK this is being sold in larger doses too. Here still 1000 iu's the most to date. There can get a variety or 2000, 4000, 5000 etc. I guess we will catch up.

I also read on Natural News that the Doctors association over in the US is trying to get these natural medicines put onto doctors script only. Explanation given was that they with upped dosage of D3 and other natural meds due to all trying to eat healthy are no longer at the doctors as often and they are losing business.

Here for arthritis doctors tell you to go buy OTC natural meds as well as for other conditions.

I take caltrate ev'ry day , try to sit out in the sun for at least 10 mins each day too as that's really all that's needed to retain the required amount of vitD for me but I daresay there are those who may need more, I like the Natural News site but always check info ' elsewhere too.

"If worries about low levels of vitamin D have you popping supplements, a new study suggests holding off and talking to your doctor first.

Researchers at Johns Hopkins University have found that high doses of vitamin D aren't only unhelpful, they may also be harmful.

Healthy adults have been "bombarded" by stories in the media on how low vitamin D levels can increase risks of everything from hypertension to hardening of the arteries, the researchers said.

"Healthy people have been popping these pills, but they should not continue taking vitamin D supplements unchecked," advised study leader Dr. Muhammad Amer, an assistant professor in the Division of General Internal Medicine at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. "At a certain point, more vitamin D no longer confers any survival benefit, so taking these expensive supplements is at best a waste of money."

To reach their findings, Amer and his team analyzed data from more than 10,000 participants in the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey from 2001 to 2004. The findings, announced May 1, appear online in the American Journal of Medicine.

Amer does stress however that some groups of people, such as the elderly and postmenopausal women, do benefit from high levels of vitamin D under a physician's supervision.

People should consult with their doctors, Amer said, before starting vitamin D supplements and have their blood levels checked. "Most healthy people are unlikely to find that supplementation prevents cardiovascular diseases or extends their lives," he added, and there is no consensus among doctors on what is the right level of vitamin D in the blood for healthy people." source

I would think the need would vary between people who live near the south pole and those who live in the tropics.

The only reason to take extra Vitamins is if you are not using what is available through normal eating and living.

An alcoholic would probavly need more and different vitamins to a non drinker, and a pregnant woman would need extra too, just depends on how hard your body is/was/has been hammered.

I always like to look at animals especially carnivores like us,they have same food needs as humans, sometimes i will get a big urge to eat an orange,i hate oranges! but if i ever get the urge i will buy one orange and eat it,my body telling me i need vitamin "C",same if i get the urge to feel the Sun on my skin,I need Vitamin "D" etc,the body is smart, pharmceutical Companies are very "Greedy".

billy

the reason why people are defficient in Vit D 3 is because of the succes of slip slop slap ad that the Cancer Council put out now we hace problem with Osteoporosis.

I am amazed at how my bones are seemingly indestructable,my body has had a fair caning for 60 years and i know my spine is stuffed but i still keep hanging in thereI only take a Vitamin B complex and Magnesium plus i take Niacin,I smoke and do not drink milk and hardly touch beer now,but I count myself lucky really.

BTW Australia is still only manufacturing Vitamin D3 in 1000 iu's whereas UK and USA has various so can take only one a day or 2 maybe not several to make up 4000 summer time and 8000 winter to avoid flu along with Vitamin C.

Oranges for last several years are too dry and pithy for some reason maybe first off drought but still after it broke. Maybe cost of water now as it seems to be rising fast like power bills.

Best for juice are Tangello's every season for last 10 years here.

To solve the problem just get your vitamin D levels checked you might be surprised!

Low vitamin D levels can cause depression and obesity- there is are large problem with vitamin d defficiency in people that cover up,and especially people wth dark skin
