Visitors warned off as outback horse cull begins

The Central Land Council has started a cull of up to 10,000 horses on Tempe Downs Station in the Northern Territory.

The council has issued a public health and safety warning to keep people clear of the property near Kings Canyon, about 300 kilometres south-west of Alice Springs.

Four helicopters carrying marksmen will be operating in the area until the middle of June.

News of the cull earlier this month sparked protests from equestrian organisations around Australia and calls to stop any future culling of waler breed horses in Central Australia.

Tempe Downs, a former cattle station of about 1,000 square kilometres, is now held by the Urrampinyi Iltjitajarri Aboriginal Land Trust.

"We have an enormous problem with feral animals – horses, donkeys, and camels which are degrading the country and dying in their thousands due to lack of food and water."

"The destruction of waterholes in particular has a profound effect on native animals.

"In one particular area there are about 10,000 feral horses suffering or about to suffer terrible and slow deaths and destroying the country for years to come." here on abc
