What to believe?.... ( non-religious thread!)

Do you ever feel concern about information placed on the i/net, I mean I go to various news/web sites and basically it's the same stuff but then we have scientists disagreeing with each other, both professing to be right, eg; global warming... some say man made ... or that human contribution is speeding it up, others say it's all part of natural climate change.. how can non-scientific people know who's right when both sides have 'facts' which support their theories?

Any other examples, anyone?

quote someone "how do you know another member lives 4900 kilometres away"

I guess if someone has been lurking , watching posts for 6 months, they would have an idea if another member had revealed where they live.

The "Paranoia" is evident.

And that new member comes on and has his first post removed for being offensive

The member has not been lurking for six months he joined on August the first

Peta you are very paranoid. By lurking I presume he / she has been reading topics for 6 months before finally signing up.

I reckon Drew must hate opening his emails knowing Peta will be in with more frivilous complaints.

Pathetic & cowardly.

A 71 year old running in with tell tales shows you have not matured.

Did you read the first post of slow snakes and I did not remove Drew did so he must have felt he had good reason my joining date is 2012 idid not participate or was aware of the meeting place for twelve months.

.look I have no objection to any member as long as it does not become offensive I have never received any communication from the staff of the site in relation to posting and I will continue to report as I value the site .

Pete

I found this site while googling for info on a subject . Anyone can peruse the topics but to comment requires joining up ie login .

Scientists often shoot themselves in the foot, when there are 2 sides and both state fact.

A classic was not too long ago nutritionists were saying to stay away from potatoes as they are of the deadly nightshade family (that's is fact) and are in theory poisonous to the body. Forward some months: Now there's a back flip, they say they are good for you because they are carbohydrates blah dee blah dee blah.

I take everything everyone says with a grain of salt. If I followed the nutritionists, I would jumping ship from one product to another and back again.

Scientists say we are in global warming. Are we really? truly.

Fact 1966 school taught the earth was on a 22.5 degree axis.

Move ahead to about mid 80's and chatting with a 15 year old, she learnt 23 degrees.

I would not be surprised if it is now much closer to 23.5 degrees.

With that comes the rotation of the earth, tilt if you like, and that means Australia has headed towards the equator by another 200 miles. Without selling I have moved 200 miles north, haha cheap move.

So any intelligent person can see the tilting is the problem not so much the global warming per se although we do not help and in fact speed up the warmimg. L:ook at the UK and the USA, the snow is moving further south into areas that have never had it, yet the polar ice caps are melting, no not really everything is shifting. Do scientists really think I would  believe all their utter crud? Nope, I will choose my intelligence and what I know and have seen over the last 72 almost 73 years.

This constant sniping at each other, complaints, accusations, sarcasm etc is making this forum a much less friendly and welcoming place than it was a few months ago. I suggest that several people on here should grow up and adopt that old and sensible policy "if you have nothing good to say, say nothing".

I agree Hugo . A bit of to and fro is ok as long as its on topic , personal stuff is a waste of time .

I live in NSW north of Sydney pretty close to the coast but not on it,my postcode is home to two strange things,i live or belong to neither, one is Morriset Mental Institution, the other a group of religious people, whose most famous adherent famously shouted " a dingo's got my baby",I belong to neither,WA is according to my google map 4900 kilometers from my home by road via Sydney, across western NSW and the tip of Victoria then the Nullabor Plain to Perth.

Billyknows says he lives in WA,you say i am billyknows, fine, you are allowed to think what you want,i am not billynows my name is Thomas Tucker,i am 64,retired truck driver, road worker and i own a motorcycle and i like animals,I mind my own business and do not really worry too much about too little.

Ihave been coming here for a very long time, more than some members have,i recently watched a person here being destroyed for his beliefs,i find that pretty shocking,i have seen what has gone on here, the push push of certain people who think that this part of the website is theirs, any person who disagrees seems to get trashed,if they stand up for what they believe is their rights then they are systematically bullied,I have watched it all,the best part was Grey Man,I liked him and hope he comes back,I hope billyknows comes back because i like the way he stood up for himself against a group of bullies.

This is why i joined when i did,I got sick of watching a good forum disintegrate before my eyes, all because of people and their damn egos, people are happy with a humdrum type existance, well,I like change.

To fwed and kfchugo, you are both right, spot on,I joined when idid for my own personal reasons,I have been perusing these pages as you all do when you visit different forums, you do not join a different forum everytime you visit! well,i certainly do not,but i like to look around, check things out,dip my toe in,have a look, get a feel.

Is that wrong,am i not allowed to join a forum at 2 am because i couldent sleep? What very odd rules,I am not out to condemn or control anyone here,i am just looking around, say a few words here,a few comments there,is this not a forum,is this not what is expected?

Like i said, been coming here lookin fo a fair bit and decided to have my two bobs worth, for what its worth, not much according to some, but you two seth and kfchugo are being fair and reasonable,I thank you kindly,if others here want to check my profile you are more than welcome!

Welcome slowsnake aka Thomas, I agree with both kfchugo and fwed the sniping needs to stop or there will be no new members interested in joining or staying.

When I saw your post on Belief - Not Religion to my mind it was easy to see why you might have made the assumption for your post , I personally take time to sum up someone up like most people do in any situation, best not to be instantly judgemental or it does, I agree with you, show paranoia.

Hopefully new people, like yourself will bring in different subjects that we will all be able to enjoy recently we seem to have got bogged down on spiritual and opposing views, different subjects will be a breath of fresh air.

Welcome slowsnake...... even if you were "Billyknows", it would make no difference to me. Everyone is entitled to a new or fresh start now and then. I too am not affiliated with either of the institutions you mentioned although of the two, the Morisset mental hospital would be my preference..... good fishing where it meets the lake and I am often in that area.

Hello vividly, what a strange welcome I have received,I am gobsmacked really thinking why am I here!

Well I am here because I can be here, some don't appreciate new blood, the old guard are fractious for this is their private place their domain, where real things seem unreal and vice versa,I don't mind,I like a bit of mischief, nothing too hard though, bit of fun,it is nice watching people crumble over perceived slights, which incidentally are imaginary,I love a bit of everything.

As Lao Tzu once said in his definition of Happiness.

Happiness is watching your neighbor fall off his roof and break his leg, that is happiness! So funny,so true,I like Lao Tzu.

Thomas

Thomas, Believe it or not kfchugo, fwed and myself are the ones who have been on this forum the longest so I guess we are the old guard, maybe we don't need to prove ourselves than the ones who joined more recently and I am a lot younger in age than most others on here, too. Probably Seth has the greatest in years but also has the greatest  sense of wacky humour.

Further info click on the blue name above anyones Avatar to send a PM or see a profile.

Vivity when I say old guard I don't mean you or kfchugo Seth or fwed I mean an old guard of thinking and attitude, this place needs to be resurrected like a Phoenix Rising, this place has become bogged down in a mire of complacency, everyone seems very scared to voice an opinion for fear of the "chosen few" a self righteous and self appointed menagerie of "Masters" by proclamation or degree, not sure which,am smiling again as I type,I really am smiling as I type!

Thomas

I like your smile slowsnake

Hello kfchugo I like that attitude, even if you we're billy knows you wouldn't care!

spoken like a true primate even though I have never met a false primate,I'm laughing in my beer,I always wondered why they called certain members of the clergy primates,am still smiling as I type,my ex lived near Budgewoi back in the 70s,some nice fishing spots around there,.i move around a bit though,I travel a lot.

but I'm here in the forum for light entertainment not to prove who invented the sky or where the stars come from who cares, everytime I have a beer I don't wonder where it come from, just where it's goin,am laughing now cos my beer is goin down the " big red lane" still laughing' I'm breaking up laughing, good stuff.

Thomas

Yes "why atheism"

why not impersonal idealism instead, that sort of allows me to worship a beer or a beer bottle?

It has two good values in beauty and goodness,so I may worship my beer as a personal God,that way I do not believe in God or disbelieve in God,that then stops any argument and I can enjoy my beer.

Or I could argue about it all day and at the end of it both parties are exhausted,no work was achieved so there was no point discussing it,nothing is resolved and everyone is happy, sated if you like.

Thomas

Put this in wrong thread, too many beers, but moved it to its proper place "the bin"a joke that,I moved it to the "Why Atheism"Thread, sorry to spoil the flow there.

Thomas
