Is 60 the new 30 - Carlos Slim seems to think so

Billionaire Carlos Slim, age 73, says workers—those in developed economies, anyway—are at their prime in their 60s.

"When you have an industrial economy like in the past where people ... do a lot of physical work and people live less years, it's OK to retire at 65," Slim told CNBC. "When you have a society of knowledge and experience and information, at this age is where you are at your best. It's [foolish] to retire at this age. And you don't have the physical work, and you have the intellectual work and you are in your best in your 60s."

Carlos Slim is judgemental to say people are foolish to retire at 65. Some want to work till they die and some don't. It's all OK! I personally think that he is being foolish for dictating what he thinks others should do/not do.

I know this is off topic but it is a lovely interlude

If you havnt seen this..... its a lovely ride

Great Video Pete. Thanks for sharing. The US is a magnificient country.

We hope to take make a road trip from the west (LA) to the East Coast sometime soon. We have family in N.C

Last time we drove in the US  from Charlotte to Florida and back.

Yes it is a magnificent country I have done several road trips with the family .

One from San Fran to Vancouver and another from   New York through New England

Also done some train journeys new York Washington new York and new York Boston new York  I would love to spend more time around new England particularly in the autumn .

For many people, low paid employment has become the modern version of slavery. People work until they die simply because they have no other choice. This is especially true in third world countries where you see poor struggling souls in their 80's or even 90's still working just in order to feed themselves.

Yeah, so it's rather ironic that a millionaire thinks we should all work on beyond the time we have the right to stop. It's great to have the choice.

Yes - my view is who work a day longer than you have to. I'd rather be golfing, riding a bike, gardening, travelling ...

I can think of a whole host of things that are more pleasurable than working

That said, there are people who want or have to work past retirement age,

However Carlos is right in the fact that many academics, reseachers, scientists are still very productive in late age. People are living longer and healthier so there is no need now to retire at 70

Carlos Slim must be living in not only a different world to me but Universe?

Where do these people get such a false idea of the real world, last time I looked ( which was this morning ) I actually witnessed a group of workers working, manually!

Nothing has changed, technology cannot climb a ladder and fix a hole in your roof,or weed your garden,a knee and back breaking job in anyone's language.

Most workers are on the scrap heap by 40 and continue to work because they have to eat,not for a new fridge or car that's bigger and better than your neighbours,I really wonder about this blokes logic and reasoning in coming to the conclusion he did!

Probably never worked a day in his life, lived off daddy's wealth,a cross between Jamie Packer and Eddie Obeid!

well he is of Lebanese descent,he probably  is related to Obeid too, pity he's got a big mouth otherwise probably a nice bloke!

I think it is wrong to label anyone but especially the "rich and famous". Some may have inherited their wealth but more often than not, they are rich through a lifetime of hard work and perserverence. We poor peasants dont pretend to know how THEY live and dont tell them how to spend their wealth or their copious leisure time.

I am always incensed when rich people tell the poor to "stop whingeing and get a job" or some such churlish comment. It just shows that they have no concept of how the poorer classes live or the difficulties they face in just keeping body and soul together on a daily basis. After about half a century of work, I think that ANYONE is entitled to sit back and enjoy retirement - lord knows, they have earned it.

Spot on kfchugo, inherited wealth has its own set of problems that us lesser mortals never get to experience,it's nice to look over the fence now and again and see how the "ultra rich" live, but to belittle the poor people who actually gave him and his family the wealth they have today is a bit rude!

His father Julian started it all off in Mexico in 1921,his real estate investments really took off,Carlos like Jamie Packer were born into it,pity his father never taught his son Carlos humility as well as business.

Considering that the average per capita income does not surpass $14,500 per annum ( Wikipedia ) so 17% of Mexico's people live in abject poverty and Slims wealth is equivalent to 5% of Mexico's annual economic output!

Yes I think he should keep his mouth shut and just be grateful his father was an astute business man.

Thomas.
