Israel land grab

Israel has announced its intention to appropriate about 4 square kilometers of Palestinian land on the West Bank, supposedly in retaliation for the recent kidnap and murder of three Israeli university students. It will be the largest appropriation of land by Israel in 30 years. The move has been condemned by both the United States and by the U.N.

Appropriation of this land would pave the way for more settlement activity which is illegal under international law and according to the U.N., "is totally counter to the two-state solution".

Those apologists for Israels brutal and murderous actions who also claim that Israel has no interest in acquiring Palestinian land and resources really ought to wake up and smell the roses.

The British government said on Monday it deplored an Israeli decision to appropriate a large swathe of land inside the occupied West Bank, saying the move would seriously damage Israel's international reputation.
On Sunday, Israel announced the appropriation of land in the Etzion Jewish settlement bloc near Bethlehem, a move which an anti-settlement group said was the biggest such claim in 30 years.
"The UK deplores the Israeli government's expropriation of 988 acres of land around the settlement of Etzion," British Foreign Secretary Philip Hammond said in a statement which echoed US calls to reverse the decision.

Felt disgusted when I heard about that.

The whole purpose of grabbing more land kfchugo is as you say, to pave the way for more Israeli settlements...illegal in the past and illegal now. The arrogance of Israel knows no bounds. The Israeli government is not after peace, Netanyahu has already indicated that he will not support a Palestinian state (see my thread: Arrogance of Israel for ref.) they're riding a tiger and they will never dismount.  There is growing discontent in the US regarding the aid given to Israel... One day America will wake up and realise that they are just putting another log on to the fire. There is also increasing disgust and discontent in Israel itself among its citizens about the unfair treatment of Palestinians.

I too deplore this action by Israel ..

I am certainly no expert on international law/relations, but it is seeming increasingly obvious to me that the only way that the Palestinians will get their own homeland is the same way that Israel got its own. By the U.N. and other heavyweight nations stepping in and setting borders and granting the Palestinians statehood with international recognition. If/when that happens, Israels actions will come home to roost and I really hope that they lose out big time in the territory they have siezed. It would be poetic justice if borders were reset to the time before the 1967 war.

In the meantime, the Palestinians desperately need to get behind Abbas and keep a tight reign on the radical elements of hamas - they need to foster and grow their reputation on the international stage. They will never succeed with violence and terrorism - even Arafat recognised that.

It doesn't matter who sets what borders Israel will always defend itself . If you fire rockets into Israel or send suicide bombers what do you expect?

Disgusting response Pete - all it 'proves' is that might is right, yet again and for the umpteenth time. Now they have some lame duck excuse. This is the West Bank, not Gaza. That land had squatters on it for zonks, the usual prelude to occupation.

I too deplore this action by Israel ..

Its to become a demilitarised zone to protect Israeli's from further abduction, torture and killings

Has become necessary due to the covert and increasing brazen attacks on Israeli citizens across the border

Also thats wehre most of the tunnels end

ABSOLUTE B/S

Disgusting bullshit, actually.

This land is in Southern West Bank and it's occupation has apparently been mooted for a long time. I imagine Palestine is awash with future occupation targets. The ~1000 acres belong(ed) to 5 Palestinian villages.

Another demonstration that Israel is not at all interested in peace, negotiations, a 2 state solution - anything other than tightening the screws. Why? Cause they can, they have all the might to continue their oppressive occupation and change the map at will. Israeli politics are very right wing at present, so are the voters and this is a bit of a political payoff.

Biased interpretation .

Doesn't make it true.

There is no justification for what Israel has done and is doing - there is even a groundswell of opinion within the country itself expressing disgust and shame at the treatment of Palestinians. Trying to pass off murder, shelling of schools/hospitals etc, destruction of infrastructure etc as "necessary" or "self defence" is pure self delusion. Israel has for decades flouted international law, committed criminal acts (assassinations) and steadfastly refused to negotiate in good faith with the Palestinians. I dont pretend that the Palestinians are a bunch of saints, but Israel certainly acts like a "terrorist state" and to my mind, well deserves that title. I am always careful to refer to Israel and not to "Jews"....again, to my mind its like talking about Muslims or extremist Islamic terrorists - not the same animals.

Tell me KFC. Why such personal hatred towards Israel.

I think that it is all good....all the nasties fighting and killing each other.

Rule Britania marmalade and jam....five chinese crackers up your  ass hole bang bang bang bang bang

It doesn't matter who sets what borders Israel will always defend itself . If you fire rockets into Israel or send suicide bombers what do you expect?

I am not sure why UN Peace Keepers can't be used.  Israel states that the Nimoy are first rate, among the best in the world.

However, I understand that there is a limit to what Peace Keepers are able to do.

The buffer zone is required to make it more difficult for militants to use snipers, fire rockets or set off  explosives near the border fence.

Blame the militants.

The measure will save lives on. Other Palestine and Israel

Its another step in the slow but patient land grab that has been going on since 1948 .

Your biased interpretation. Must be hard not being able to think objectively

It is not my interpretation it is fact , history .

In a sea of Muslims slaughtering each other I support the little island of Israel , not uncritically , but I believe the Jews deserve a place they can call home .

Considering the might and wealth they are surrounded by , I don't believe we can stand back and see another Genocide take place . Which is what their adversities have vowed will happen.

We now have in the Ukrain a much bigger issue which could be the start of Ww3 ..Russia has invaded the Ukraine . The Ukraines integrity was guaranteed by the US and UK and Russia for giving up nuclear weapons they inherited from the USSR .They were the worlds third largest nuclear power.

NATO cannot let this stand otherwise all ex USSR occupied countries are threatened..

We have as of last Friday to all intents joined NATO .

All very poetic sounding pete . Israel , from memory , has the fifth or sixth biggest defence force in the world . It has strong financial backing from numerous sources but including 5/7 billion a year every year from the USA . It has pacts and treaties with some of its neighbouring countries and some of the ones it doesn,t have are " client " states of the USA . It has a nuclear arsenal . You can sleep soundly without concern that Israel will be swept away . It may happen that like South Africa it realises it has no choice but join the 21st century .

The Ukraine agreement also had an agreement about NATO . It has been dishonoured by NATO and the west . Let the facts be known . It takes two sides to agree and two sides to comply . There is always grey .

Regardless as to if its a bigger issue or a lesser one the thread concerns the land grab of Palestinian land .

Solomon - Israel is illegally grabbing Palestinian land - the U.N. and several other nations have condemned that action. Whats to interpret?

It is to prevent further incursions and violence on the part of the militants and in so doing prevent further wars and bloodshed on both sides

Are you a broken recording of false assertions? Seizing more land, understandably increases the sense of injustice and freshens up hatred, not just in Palestine. This makes further and ongoing clashes more, not less certain. It is the opposite of preventive, it is luridly inflammatory. Israel does not give a shit about that, feeling secure behind a shield of superior military might and will continue to inflict any humiliation and injustice they feel like for the forseeable future.

Your comments are not only bereft of fact, but also of logic. No more than assertions of your dogma accompanied by the necessary twisting of truth.

Meanwhile back at the ranch ...(1 Sep. 2014)

Abbas, in protocol of Doha meeting: PA will give Israel authority of West Bank if border talks fail. Protocol from meeting quotes Palestinian president's message to Israeli official in August; during meeting, Abbas reportedly accused Hamas' Khaled Meshal of breaching reconciliation and orchestrating coup.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has reportedly told Israel that if negotiations with the United States about establishing a Palestinian state within the 1967 lines fail, he will transfer responsibility of West Bank lands to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

The report emerged Monday in the Lebanese newspaper Al Akhbar, citing transcripts of a meeting in Doha between Abbas and Qatar’s Emir Tamim bin Hamad bin Khalifa Al Thani. The newspaper published a photograph of the document, which appeared to come from the emir’s office.

Abbas reportedly told his counterparts at the Doha meeting that he told the Israeli official: "The peace process failed after 20 years, so our new strategy is that the United States and Israel agree to establish a Palestinian state on the 1967 borders with Jerusalem as its capital in a limited amount of time, and that both sides immediately begin determining the borders.

According to Al Akhbar, Abbas was very angry during the meeting in Doha. The main part of the conversation, most of which focused on Hamas’ behavior toward the Palestinian Authority, was what Abbas characterized as Hamas’ attempted coup in the West Bank. “We agreed on a unity government in elections, but it seems that it will not go into effect. You are smuggling money and ammunition into the West Bank, not for a confrontation with Israel but to carry out a coup against me,” Abbas said. “All of this went on until the Israeli intelligence commander came to me [it is not clear whether he is referring to Yoram Cohen or a different intelligence official].”

“A security official came to me two weeks ago [in early August] and told me about the cell that had been arrested, which had been planning a coup against me," Abbas added. "That cell is connected to a person named Jawad who is staying in Jordan. That person reports to Saleh al-Arouri [a high-ranking Hamas operative living in Turkey].”

Abbas also complained about the relations Hamas was cultivating with his rival, Mohammed Dahlan, and about how the purpose of this cooperation was to hurt Abbas and the PA.

Abbas also complained about how Hamas had taken a policy that did not agree with the Palestinian national consensus. Hamas, he said, was acting as if it were the only one in charge, particularly in the Gaza Strip, and intended to turn him into a fig leaf.

Could you provide a small comment as to your point please ?

Are you really that daft? No on second thoughts , don't bother.

I have no comment to make, other than record this.

Others can draw whatever conclusion they wish.

Thoughtful people would not like to see another Palestinian civil war.

The Islamic militant group ISIS beheaded Steven Joel Sotloff, an American freelance journalist who was abducted a year ago in Syria, in a video that surfaced Tuesday, a jihadist monitoring organization said.

We all read or watch or listen to the news. Is this somehow related to this topic?

Yes - Its consequences such as this that the demilitarised zone is designed to avoid

Yes - Its consequences such as this that the demilitarised zone is designed to avoid

demilitarised zone?

Its a land grab not a no mans land area . Villages , olive groves etc and  Israeli settlements . Curious if you requested my troll doll of you to be removed ? The nice doll ok but the ugly one not so lol ?

Was it removed ? I didnt notice.

The point I was making was that what ISIS is doing to journalists, Hamasa did to 3 reenagers in what is now the new demilitarised zone

IS is goading the yanks to send troops and has not annexed Palestinian land which is what the thread is about . Hamas may or may not have had anything to do with the 3 teenagers but the suspects are not friends of Hamas .

You either cannot see that your excuse is implausable or are deliberately muddying the waters .

You talk of my interpretation yet I stated history and fact .

Well, you coughed up a fuller explanation of your previous dog whistle. I refer you to my early posting today - this response remains relevant to your last assertion. I could probably use for most of your utterances, actually.
