Thousands of Australian computers are being locked up by hackers using malicious software that encrypts files and asks for a ransom to make them available again.

Fairfax Media understands Australian government agencies and a number of large enterprises and individuals have been successfully targeted by the scam.

I have a iMac computer and use the apple time machine app for back up onto an external hard drive. I have never been hacked but expect that the time machine app would replace my data if it happened. If I was to buy a new Mac I would use time machine to restore olf files , pics etc and have successfully done that before.

So if hacked and encrypted I would wipe hard drive or do a fresh install of OS and then connect to external hard drive and use time machine. There are similar apps for Windows or whatever OS.

I had a phone call yesterday from a gent claiming to be from Telstra - advising my Internet will be cut off within 2 hours....had to do with Google when visiting various sites and said I was sent a number of alerts to which I had not responded.

But it could be fixed up if I turned on my computer and he would take me through it.

Almost tempted as owing to an outage my email was not working. I did not like the gent's foreign accent so told him I did not have Internet - so we parted,

When I rang Telstra after a 40 minute wait I found out there was not an imminent cut due to my service. The email is another story - the outage is fixed but some person at Telstra who did not understand my system messed up my settings - it took ages to get it set up right initially.

I got an email yesterday claiming to be from ANZ and it got past the spam filter. It said My card or number , forget which ,had been knocked back three times and so on. I did not read any further as I have no account with ANZ and have had no knockbacks. Even if it was supposed to be from my credit union I know they do not use emails to alert me of a problem.

As far as I know and I have checked it out fairly well no bank or financial institution will contact a customer for personal details. The fact that it is one way for scammers to obtain info is just one of many reasons banks don,t do that.

Yes Geoff :)

It is good to be aware and don't click on links sent in emails for your accounts.
