Why does britain want to hang on to scotland?

 here's the answer .......

if Scotland becomes independent, it gets to keep 90% of the revenues from its huge oil reserves.

The New York Times reports:

Scottish nationalists have long argued that being governed from London has deprived their country of its fair share of the wealth from Britain’s oil and natural gas fields, which mostly lie in North Sea waters off their shores.
“It’s Scotland’s oil” was the rallying cry in the 1970s that helped raise the profile of the Scottish Nationalist Party, which now leads the country and is pushing for a vote to secede in the referendum on Thursday. Alex Salmond, the politician leading the separatist movement, has pointed to North Sea energy as the treasure that would help finance an independent Scotland — ensuring that the country could continue the generous public spending, including free university tuition, that he is promising voters.

I, however, have a personal reason for wanting an independent Scotland. I’m an ex-foreign correspondent, vintage 1983-2003, who retired after the Iraq War, too old to be scared stiff and too stiff to sleep on the ground.

Yet once foreign correspondenting gets in your blood…

Ah, there’s nothing like a primitive, quarrel-torn, disastrous Third World country. And Scotland has everything it needs to be what old-school foreign correspondents fondly call a “shit-hole.”

Plus Scotland is conveniently located for aging journos like myself. It can be “covered” from the comforts of The Ritz in London, and there will be plenty of unemployed Scottish unionist refugees hanging around waiting to be hired as drivers and translators.

Scotland’s economy will be the requisite Third World shambles. Scotland’s two dominant political parties are the leftist Scottish National Party and the leftist Scottish Labor Party. These can be counted on to vie in out-lefting each other. Cuba-with-chilblains, here we come!

England can re-take Scotland overnight by force if they wish to.

I think they will be glad to get rid of the dole and pension bills.

I have recently been to Southern Ireland and seen the poverty there. Northern Ireland is a much more wealthy place.

Good question Kika..to the Scots there are many reasons including the fact that.. Scotland's oil reserves are vast and the Scots are not reaping the benefits of it.  Many economists agree that if Scotland were to separate from the UK..it could become one of the richist countries in Europe.

In addition the Scots resent that the UK continues to build nuclear weapons in their country and feel it's hypocritical since the UK encourages other countries to curtail production of nuclear weapons.

What I find interesting about the vote is that children aged 16 can vote yet Scottish citizens living abroad or in Britain are not able to ???

I find the whole business laughable if not ridiculous, are the scots that thick in the head, whether they like it or not, it is still one small island, defense depends on the whole island cooperating together, or end up like europe, with a war event somewhere most of the time. Or are they just acting out of GREED. self interest.

From viewing TV last night I saw many Pakies and Indians campigning to get out of Britain yet back in their own lands they would probably be beggers.

There are nuclear power stations all over the British isles including Scotland.

I will predict a vote for staying in UK 70% and to go about 20%..... 10% too stupid to go and vote which is not compulsory.

Australia remains to be the only country in the world where water is more expensive than petrol.

With 63 million English and 3 million scots who pass laws effecting England and cost the English taxpayers subsidy . England will not notice whatever Scotland does.

It is my belief a Yes vote is stupid.

Some Scottish are as stubborn as the Irish.......hatred and myths from 500 years ago.

Care to elaborate a bit Radish?

The English subjugated the Irish ( at least in the north) and the Scots - their hatred has a pretty solid foundation of justification.

When did the English subjagate ulster or Scotland .

ulster voted not to join Eire but remain part of the UK

uniting the two kingdoms was a Scottish idea under a Scottish king .Anf confirmed by a majority in their parliament .

kfc s you say the history of what England did to both the Irish and Scottish  has a solid foundation and was brutal and a solid foundation. Ancient history to some but something that has never been forgotton or forgiven, interesting to see what happens today.

Nice to see all the opinions as to whether the vote should go yes or no.

My view - It is up to the Scots themselves to decide.

Up to 4.2 million who are registered to have a vote on it in Scotland not 3 million as Pete has  said, there are over 5 million people in Scotland. Guess we will find out tomorrow unless it ends up very close.

Sorry viv typing on an I phone ment 5

so what's that 62 million in England and 5 in Scotland .

i think the Yes vote will just get over the line ,

The question was ulster and Scotland . The big fights in both were by their own people between Protestant And catholic .

Just read the story of Mary queen of scots and France,

Pete I did history  at school did you?

Mary Queen of Scots was in jail (The Tower? But you can look that up) for 18 years before being executed by Elizabeth 1st, while her baby son was left without a mother all that time.

Look up the Act which forced the Scottish Crofters of their land, the potatoe famines which affected both Scotland and Ireland and Wales while England took the potatoes for themselves.  Oliver Cromwell in Ireland, the lists are endless of why The Scots have a long memory of what affected them.

Mary queen of scots was queen of France before . She was a tool of the guises against the Medici family . She was hated in Scotland as she was a catholic . She was not in the tower for eighteen years ,

it was her son James that became the first king of th uk .

The crofters were not cleared by the English but Scottish lairds ...

Scotland leaving the Union is the equivalent of Tasmania leaving the commonwealth ,

I'd vote for that  :)

Tassie has a history of conflict with mainland Australia involving death and destruction ? Tassie has a native tongue or accent markedly different from the rest of Oz ? Even if you are talking about size only the comparison falls short.

Get a life mate

What do you care if the Scots vote to leave or not ? You do not live there and call yourself an aussie. Like me or any other aussie its a UK thing and other than having some mild interest does not concern us.

I have a life Maaate and so do you which you claim to be as an aussie. Personally I reckon you have a false sense of being otherwise because you carry on like a colonel blimp. Well Maaate I could be very wrong but the question remains why you should give a rats what the Scots decide.

So much pent up anger Geoff. Why maate?

Have you tried meditation?

Pent up anger ? Mild amusement at colonel blimp would be my take on my post. With you its just plain disdain. Not a fan of lazy one liners by people like yourself who seem to delight in putting people down. For some obscure reason you seem to think you have a sense of humour which sorry to say is very much misplaced.

Crikey - is that a cut and paste or your own words. Can't really tell these days.

Both the stuff of used toilet paper.
