Has another plane gone missing ?

From the ABC

"An Air Asia flight from Indonesia's Surabaya to Singapore has lost contact with air traffic control, Indonesian media is reporting.

Transport Ministry official Hadi Mustofa said the aircraft, flight number QZ 8501, lost contact with the Jakarta air traffic control tower at 6:17 a.m local time (9:17am AEDT).

He said the plane had asked for an unusual route before it lost contact."

Too early yet to speculate. I hope passengers are safe.

Just read that they believe the missing plane might be at the bottom of the sea. Those poor people and relatives.

Oil slicks found;   it is in the Java sea somewhere and I would suggest the black box will start transmitting soon.

Black boxes are fitted with an underwater locator beacon that starts emitting a pulse if its sensor touches water. They work to a depth of just over four kilometres, and can "ping" once a second for 30 days before the battery runs out.

I am not sure exactly how long after a crash they start emitting a pulse.
