So called Monks soliciting money on the streets

Don't get conned.   Why should Aussies fund the lifestyle of these con artists.

Consumer Protection is investigating concerns about men dressed as Buddhist monks collecting cash in exchange for prayer beads, amulets or spiritual guidebooks.

In the last few days there have been numerous reports of shaven headed men in brown coloured robes asking for charitable donations of $20, $30 or $40 on the streets of Perth. Previously there have been sightings in Mandurah.

The Buddhist Society of Western Australia has confirmed to Consumer Protection that these men are not members of their organisation and advised that ‘monks are not allowed to receive, handle or touch any money as laid down in the monastic rules by the Buddha 2500 years ago’.

I get enough begging letters in the mail,  without putting up with beggers on the street,    there are some very talented buskers in the city,   who at least give you some entertainment for your money,   dont mind giving them a bit of spare change,      there is an old man who plays a diggeridoo outside our safeway,  who has a gorgeous labrador dog with him,      i always buy him a sandwich or pie , depending on the weather,  and a can of drink,   get a bag of dog food for the lab,  and always give him whatever change i have,     my husband says im crazy,   reckons he probably has more than ill ever have,     could be right,      often hear of these old folk dying and find a fortune left behind,

A THIRD of Melbourne’s beggars are international tourists seeking to boost their travel funds.

Victoria Police, Melbourne City Council and the Salvation Army have raised concerns over a spike in numbers of bogus beggars during the holiday season.

Salvation Army Major Brendan Nottle said men from Germany and Sweden — most under 30 — made up the bulk of the backpacking beggars.

From what I saw on TV they will only take notes and one lady gave $2 and he threw it back at her.

I do not give to beggars at all now.  I understand in addition to their dole money which everyone is entitled to if they are on the streets;  many make a tidy untaxed sum which provides booze and cigarettes in most cases.  I am not funding that.

It actually amazes me why anybody gives them money ?

Surely the average person must read newspapers etc. to know they are scammers.

Guess you do not get much for a coin these days - many too lazy to bend down and pick one up of the path.
