Popular food recalled from supermarkets after bacteria found

Health authorities in South Australia have detected listeria in five smoked fish products produced by Harris Smokehouse. The fish products are sold nationally through IGA supermarkets.

The products are Everyday Smashed Smoked Salmon, Premium Smoked Salmon, Hot Smoked Ocean Trout, Hot Smoked Barramundi and Smoked Salmon Trimmings.

Elderly, immunocompromised or pregnant Australians are being warned to avoid these products.

So far, no cases of listeriosis, the disease caused by listeria bacteria, have been seen in hospitals.

In most people the infection will result in a mild illness, but it can be dangerous for the elderly and those with compromised immunity.

Symptoms of the illness include fever, chills, vomiting, neck stiffness and slow onset of confusion. There can be a delay of up to six weeks between initially coming in contact with the bacteria and the eventual symptoms, so keep an eye out over the next few weeks.

Have you purchased any of these smoked fish products?
