Regional pub's controversial move to reduce food waste

An Irish pub in Ballarat, Victoria has caused a stir online after one user posted a photo of his dinner there to Reddit.

A sign in the picture, taken at Irish Murphy’s Ballarat, reads: To keep our prices and wastage down, salad and vegetables are no longer presented with your meal. the sign reads. They are still available to purchase as a side. Appreciate your understanding.

Many Reddit users reacted with horror.

“At this point why even bother going out for a meal”, one user wrote.

“So what, they just plate up a steak or a schnitzel with nothing else on the plate if you don‘t order sides?” said another.

What do you think? Should salad or vegetables be standard with a meal?

This is what happens in America, but we are not America. We are Australian and we love our meat and veg, chips and salad or we will just go elsewhere

If people know what some establishments do with salads that customers do not eat…then they will be happy they do not order it or get it on their plate. Leave it to your imagination. It’s only a garnish on the plate for the most part!

The wastage of food in restaurants and pubs just appalls me.  So many people leave half their meal on the plate and it just goes in the bin.  Too busy with their phones and not concentrating on eating and being present with the others on the table.

Then there are a lot of people who don't eat "green stuff" or vegetables, so why bother taking it if you're not going to eat it?  I've lost count of the number of times over the years I've watched people at Maccas, Hungry Jacks etc, order burgers and then scrape all the "salad muck" (as I heard one person call it years ago) off before they eat it.  They only want the bread, meat and cheese, nothing else.

So long as the cost of buying the separate steak and the sides are the same as the whole meal used to be, what's the problem?  I am certainly happy to pay for what I particularly want to eat, rather than take pot luck on what I am going to get.

Think more seriously about it before you go off the deep end.  You can make this work to your advantage.

"So long as the cost of buying the separate steak and the sides are the same as the whole meal used to be, what's the problem?"

That is exactly what the problem may well be. The fear is the cost of the protein will stay as is and then you pay extra for salad or veg meaning you get stung twice for the same meal. A far better 'option' would be to ask each customer whether they wanted the greenery and provide it accordingly. Not charge them extra for having it.

The quality of the salad would be the greater problem!

This has been happening for quite a while, if you want more than 1 lettuce leaf 'to make the plate look nice' than you have to pay for a side salad...I'm sure it still comes with way toooo many chips which most of can't eat...even the amount of meat you get is slowly dwindling in the hope you don't notice
