Woman cheats Centrelink out of $17,500, avoids jail
A 61-year-old Victorian woman who falsely claimed $17,500 in Centrelink payments has avoided a jail sentence for her fraud.
The woman, a Vietnamese migrant who has been an RSL volunteer for seven years, pleaded guilty to falsely claiming Newstart and rent assistance payments from 2010–2013.
Magistrate Brian Clifford said, “But for the fact you have not appeared before this court before, you would have been going to jail today.”
Defence lawyer Dee Giannopoulos claims that Ms Glenister “instructed me that in her culture any home bought is for the entire (extended) family. [So] In her mind she did not feel she was a homeowner despite her name being on the title.”
Ms Glenister was convicted, fined $3500 and ordered to repay $15,220 to Centrelink.
Do you think this sentence is fair? And what of Ms Glenister’s claim that she didn’t realise she was a house owner? Have you heard of any similar defences? If you had to come up with a wacky defence for cheating Centrelink what would it be?
Cheating Centrelink is cheating the tax paying public. If this woman defrauded $17,500 why was she ordered to pay back only $15,220 ? I think her excuse for her theft was pitiful and unbelievable and the fine should have been steeper.
Politicians too should have to pay huge fines when they claim false expenses. That might make the greedy ratbags think twice about thieving from the public purse.
