It's time for an inheritance tax

"One of the world's most celebrated economists has suggested the Turnbull Government introduce an inheritance tax to help address rising wealth inequality, which is making it increasingly difficult for middle-income Australians to buy their own homes....

It struck him as odd the Australian Government imposed no taxes on those who had been bequeathed multi-million-dollar properties, while governments in the United States and Europe taxed the same gifts at between 40 and 45 per cent."

Makes sense to me.

Its odd that Australia seems to be one out in not having inheritance tax.

We used to have it. It was a state tax.

Joh Bjelke-Petersen abolished it in Queensland when he was premier. All the old people in other states moved to Qld to die, so all the other states had to abolish it too.

There was no sense to the change.

In America they have a Gift Tax. When Oprah Winfrey gave away something like 100 cars on one of her shows, everyone was estatic, unfortunately they didn't realise they had to pay a Gift Tax on the cars, so some could not afford it and could'nt accept the cars.

How awful would that be ... you win a car and cannot take it because of a gift tax that you cannot afford ??

... that might have been the only thing they won in their life.

What if I took the car, then sold it, then paid the tax. I'd have to still be ahead.

Depends how much the Gift Tax is ... but  I suspect you would have to pay the tax before you took ownership of the car.

Meh. Just take out a loan for the amount of the tax. Pay it back when you sell the car.

The car would have to be in your name when accepting it, so the Tax would have to be paid first.

I believe they Tax you on Lottery wins as well.

NO WAY I would agree with that tax -- if I wanted to leave what I own then thats what I have worked hard for and have also paid bloody taxes on it to up keep and look after it -- I have also saved the Government a heap because of looking after quite a few people while they were ill too.

The Pollies seem to want everything THEIR way and to milk us dry -- but begrudge us anything.

Plan B

Yhey will never bring that in as it would mean the Politicians would have to at long last pay some money back.

Well lets hope as we pay a heap of stamp duty and lots of other payments and I am hoping that what I have will be passed onto my Son maybe he won't have to claim a pension ?

PlanB @ 8 hours...first laugh I had today...the picture did it!!

The best thing about an inheritance tax is that the person who had the money definitely doesn't need it any more.

An inheritance tax would be political suicide for whichever party introduced it. We already have so many taxes that it would be just indecent to do so. People work (and pay tax) all their lives and it would be obscene to tax that money yet again on their death.

As has been noted many times on this and other fora, only the poor and the workers pay the bulk of taxes. The wealthy and corporations have all sorts of ways to mitigate or avoid it.

Unfortunately, generations of politician from both main parties have made ANY new tax political suicide.

This country is not poor. Look at all the private wealth. But the government is poor.

We NEED new taxes.

i agree kfchugo.  inheritance tax won't work anyway as there are so many ways of avoiding taxes for the wealthy, e.g. overseas tax havens, family trusts, charities ........ just look at the clinton foundation!

and, anything proposed by a celebrated economist has to be questioned.

Is not an inheritance tax the same as death duties?   Which we used to have

It is technically the same, but correct me if I'm wrong.

Yes. It really should be called death duties.

But some people don't like thinking about death.

YEs I thought it was the same,  hell we pay enough taxes when alive !

The government might try to argue that the beneficiaries are taxed on money they receive from an estate, but the result is the same - they would be taxing money that has been taxed again and again over the deceased persons life. We are getting to the stage that we will be paying tax on just about any transaction where money changes hands.....taxes on taxes as we now pay with GST. We pay huge taxes and excise on fuel, tobacco, alcohol etc., etc and THEN have to pay GST on top of that.

It is the modern day version of slavery, where we work and toil but get nowhere in life. The working class are mere "cattle" in the global financial system. Anyone who thinks we should be paying MORE tax has rocks in their head.

And it is going to get worse kfc-- look into the Agends 21 > 30  getting there bit but bit

I want to see the large corporations taxed but not so much they lose interest in investing in this country.

We are all human and try to avoid paying tax in some areas if we can...I think many taxes are unnecessary and when doing my return I do try to take advantage of any legal loopholes.

I would not let some of these "economists" take care of my home budget...

1. Which taxes are unnecessary?

2. Which government servcies should be cut after your "unnecessary" taxes are eliminated?

Keep paying your taxes, barak - the rest of us are relying on you.

As a salaried employee, I can't avoid paying tax.

" Of course, any such tax would be opposed by the wealthy elite. You wouldn’t expect otherwise. But if the tax threshold were set at, say A$2 million, only a tiny proportion of households would be affected. And the rest of us would benefit directly from the extra revenues, which might then be used to pay for universal free tertiary education, for example, or a major increase in public housing. "

Don't kid yourself Geo

The money would be spent on United Nations Agenda....

and the polies would keep squeezing the pensioner..

Abby

I fail to understand your reply.

Me too.

Geoff I was replying to

"might then be used to pay for universal free tertiary education, for example, or a major increase in public housing".

The Politicians would find many other ways of spending it but not anything sensible that would help the average Australian.

As long as they don't tax me on my first 10m, I'm ok with it!

You won't notice once you're dead.
