Telstra fined $10 million in Federal Court
The Federal Court fined Telstra $10 million yesterday for chargining up to 100,000 Telstra customers for third-party online content without their knowledge or agreement.
The Premium Direct Billing service customers were charged for games and ringtones outside the usual app marketplace. Some customers were charged for services associated with other people's numbers or the previous owner of that phone number.
Justice Moshinsky found that Telstra's conduct was deliberate and that senior management was aware that the steps the company had taken to deal with the problems had not been effective.
Up until October 2017, Telstra had received $61.7 million in net revenue from the service. Telstra has currently refunded around $5 million to affected customers.
