Sunrise faces court-enforced review

The Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) has accepted a court-enforceable undertaking from Channel Seven following breaches of the Commercial TV Code of Practice in a Sunrise segment broadcast in March 2018.

The segment dealt with the adoption of indigenous children and child abuse in indigenous communities. ACMA found that the segment was inaccurate and provoked serious contempt on the basis of race in breach of the industry’s code.

Channel Seven sought judicial review of ACMA’s findings that the segment provoked serious contempt on the basis of race, but discontinued court proceedings in April this year.

Under the court-enforceable undertaking, Channel Seven must conduct an independent review of how and the extent to which relevant production processes on Sunrise ensure code compliance in relation to sensitive and complex matters.

A report of the review must be provided to Channel Seven’s board and audit and risk committee within six months.

ACMA will verify the independence of, and terms of reference for, the review.

Channel Seven has also undertaken that Sunrise editorial staff will be trained to identify and deal with sensitive matters within six months and notify ACMA within five business days that the training is complete.

If Channel Seven breaches the court-enforceable undertaking, ACMA can apply to the Federal Court for a number of orders, including directing Channel Seven to comply with the undertaking, and any other order the court considers appropriate.

What do you think? Is this penalty fair or should Channel Seven have copped harsher penalties for this story?

Good one!!

They should ban all breakfast shows.

It's all so damned precious - the indigenous complaint industry in overdrive.

Well that Prue person is a total dim wit and always has been -- plus is a know it all and a really nasty person, she is also full of her own importance which is unwarranted.

So many of these morning shows -- are full of ---- and the so-called journalists on them have NO knowledge at all

Most current affair programmes are like that ... ning-nongs interviewing ning-nongs making out they are eggspurts.

Too many journalists talking as if they have a degree in Social Behaviour and  giving their opinion and complete know-alls. Then we have Dr. Phil making money out of other's misery and Ellen who does the same routine every day, that's why I only put the T.V. on after 4P.M.

There are very few TV morning programs that consider the outcome of some reporting.

For some it is a "look at me I'm good" trip. This is to keep the ratings high for the station.

Never watch them and never will, they are all full shit as far as I am conserned, FALSE NEWS!

Only the ABC goes on in our house, no Murdoch.

Love our ABC so hands off our ABC, LNP!

Paddo, LOL.. What are you afraid of? something which may corrupt your belief system? Or someone else in the household being exposed to different views? I watch everything, my ears are finely tuned organs with extreme accuracy.

Adrian anus, you think out your butt actually. You have wrong thinking on here over and over.

You watch nothing because nothing sinks in. You uphold the same lack of values consistently.

Your views are extreme and not at all flexible so what you said is piffle.

You may uphold the values of Murdoch but you certainly do not absorb the words from scientists or actual experts.

You are one of the most extreme commentators on here.

If I want to watch a program away from the ABC I would tape it. I am not interested in every bit of garbage and twisted and unsubstantiated pieces that helped to brainwash people to vote in a government that does not represent them.

My family consists of intelligent, educated people who would outargue you on any topic or so called twisted view of yours. None subscribe to your way of thinking and if they all lived in my house with us I would need to build a few more floors.

I usually don’t use these kinds of words but I make an exception for you, you wanka!

Paddington; pot - kettle - black!

Yes KSS, you are much the same as Adrianus! I agree wholeheartedly.

At least I can post without being abusive Paddington.

There ya go have a latte and chill out

I tape everyting I watch nothing live -- so as I can flick through any Ads/sport or such -- but I moslty watc the ABC and SPS except for a few things interesting that are on other chanells -- but I flick through any sport on the ABC as well

Paddington 1

Rightards 0

Yes not like me KSS, but I just broke down lol. That might be my only outburst for a while but could not happen to worthier people than you and your mate Adri anus.

Thanks Knows-a-lot

Ditto Plan B

I like Sunrise but the pensalties should have harder. They need to review  beforehand the topics they are discussing. That goes for any  morning show

If children are being neglected and abused, removal is necessary in the short-term regardless of whether they are black or white..however.. when this sensitive issue is being discussed, we don’t need three totally inexperienced and glib, foot in the mouth reporters doing it. This is not the first time Sunrise addressed Aboriginal adoption in an oafish way..why didn’t they invite the people who are most affected to put forward their views?

In my opinion, taking a child and putting that child back in a situation with similar conditions is criminal. The temporary solution would be to have Care Homes for these children, with well paid Aboriginal workers looking after them, until decisions about their future can be made.

Absolutely agree Sophie. I can't stand that so called "social commentator" Pru MacSween who once said  she wanted to run-over writer and former broadcaster Yassmin Abdel-Magied.

I remember Prue back when she was on -- Beaty and the Beast  --  she was a biy of work then -- she really has a very high opinion of herself

When you have the likes of Jacinta White and Warren Mundine (both erudite educated proud Aboriginal people fighting for thier people) advocating for the same things Sunrise was, (i.e. put the kids first and remove them from danger) I have to question the faux-outrage of those in inner city suburbs. Where are they when the children are abused? Where are they when Aboriginal women and children are subjected to more violence than non-Aboriginal women and children?

Unless these things are talked about openly and honestly without fear of prosecution or ridicule, nothing will change. As it hasn't in 40 years!

+1

What an absolute load of PC rubbish.

And, where is the pile-on re freedom of the press on this one - also not a peep from the leftie, inner city usual moaners & groaners.

Would not watch any morning shows - even if paid.  They all seem inane.

We only put the TV on at 3.00pm for The Chase (UK) and then  the news.

Disgusted by Reagans response - and the bad language in the vid. he mentioned.

Had a word with Reagan and requested he puts up a sign when bad language is being used, hang in there Troubadour. When you see this, don't click

Nothing wrong with the video Reagan posted. It fitted the bill aptly. Troubador, Why aren't you offended by Paddington's abusive post to Adrianus?

sorry you were terrified by the vid Troubadour. Try to get out some more!

The faux horror at Sunrise's 'gaffe' reminds of the similar confected outrage at Australia Day, the flag, the anthem and so on.

But what about those children and their young mothers who are getting no relief from the dreadful conditions and molestation they are faced with at this very minute in outlying suburbs and particularly rural and remote communities?

As far back as any here might remember there has been hundreds of millions of taxpayers' dollars allocated from the federal, State and local government budgets for Indigenous assistance and advancement.  At the same time though there are the regular reports of the States' and federal government's auditors listing the wastage, misappropriation and theft and outright disregard of the financial responsibility and controls.  The autonomy and self-management allowed by the Whitlam government and in place for decades after resulted in even worse abuse.  As well, the black curtain descended so that no-one, including the media, was ever able to lift the tarp on what was happening in the communities.

It is a wonder that AFC were not organised in for a raid

or that Royal Commission is not called into the matter
