Retirement villages: 97-year-old challenging contracts

Unfair practices ... Keith Parsons claims the system, including contracts, management rules and his 30% exit fee, is so complex that it tips the balance in favour of developers over residents.

Does anyone here have personal experiences like Keith's?

Or advice to offer?

Yes I have, to both RnR.  Don't let anybody close to you even consider buying into a retirement village on the East Coast of Australia.  Speaking in general, they are the greatest legal rip off in the Country.

I agree you would be better off staying in your own home and paying for someone to do your garden etc -- these places to buy into are a down right rip off

I have to admire the 97 year old Man, he sure is great for his age and good on him I say -- looks great also

Agree with all of the above.

I agree with the above comments - the greatest rip off out even if I stay twenty or thirty years which is a big possibility - the way they have already ripped us off is enough and at the end, my children will be lucky to get even a quarter of what we paid to get in here!!!

Find another option - a gated community or small village where it is freehold and has body corp. fees and you can sell your property yourself!!!!

Yeah, Keith is right on the money!  This is the sort of thing that should be taught to all school students.  I don't know how  the reirement industry continues to get way with it!

I have been in Real Estate for 45 years & have seen some scams in my day, BUT these retirement villages are a license to print money.  It is disgusting.  A gated community with the strata rip offs is 100 times better.  The only other thing that I would suggest ( I don't know about States other than NSW) is what they call a Sep 5 development.  These are generally larger medium density strata developments with ownership limited to over 55's.  They are fully saleable, the same as any other real estate & you are not paying rent to the owner of the land & NO exit fees.
