American rocket donated to bushfire appeal

A MegaBoom 300,000 horsepower rocket motor that once had a man strapped to it, and launched to 46 g-force, has been donated to assist with aiding the bushfire relief auction which has blasted off in the last 24 hours.

The US Aerodyne MegaBoom Rocket engine was an exciting part of the China Lake human g-force tests undergone back in the 1960s and has been generously donated by Rosco McGlashan an Australian drag racing record-holder to be featured in Lloyds Auctions Bushfire Relief Charity Auction.

This iconic engine is well known in the United States, as Col John Stapp rode the rocket sled back in the 60s to test space structures, subjecting his body to unbelievable forces, exceeding 46 g-force in this MegaBoom.

Mr Stapp’s efforts in the MegaBoom led him to be known as the ‘fastest man on earth’, going on to assist in improving the safety on forms of travelling modes such as planes and cars, providing a further understanding on the human tolerance to g-forces, until he passed away in 1999 at the age of 89.

All proceeds raised for this rocket motor will be donated to the Australian Red Cross.

The auctions to come over the next few weeks will feature a wide range of items including sporting and motoring memorabilia, pink and yellow diamonds, artworks from famous artists, experiences and services.

Bidding for the Bushfire Relief Charity Auctions is now live at www.lloydsauctions.com.au or if you are in a position to donate an item or experience that people can bid on to raise vital funds, please call Lloyd’s on 1800 456 588.

I thought it might be going to be used to snuff the fire out! Like they did with the burning oil wells. :)

I thought much the same myself, I have seen oil fires put out by using explosives and thought it may be the same principle.

Imagination can get the best of us at times.
