Another strange COVID-19 symptom

Spanish researchers think they've found another symptom of COVID-19 not previously considered.

Mouth lesions were found in 21 COVID-19 patient’s mouths with COVID-19 examined at Ramon y Cajal University Hospital in Madrid. Helath experts now believe the lesion could be another side-effect of having coronavirus.

The  findings - published in JAMA Dermatology - found six of the patients with a skin rash had some form of enanthem in their mouths.

"This work describes preliminary observations and is limited by the small number of cases and the absence of a control group," researchers wrote.

"Despite the increasing reports of skin rashes in patients with COVID-19, establishing an etiological diagnosis is challenging.

“However, the presence of enanthem is a strong clue that suggests a viral etiology rather than a drug reaction, especially when a petechial pattern is observed.”

Researchers say many patients suspected or confirmed to have COVID-19 have not had their mouths examined, due to obvious risks involved.

The lesions join a growing list of strange COVID-19 symptoms detected by health experts. Other strange symptoms include clumsiness disturbance in mental functioning, rashes on feet and toes, body rashes, loss of taste and smell and migraines.

Yet more symptoms to add to the cuerrent list of Covid19 symtoms

Of course we must not forget the people that are asymptomatic  ... no symptoms

This a complex virus and we learn more about it as time passes. To think that many people are not taking this seriously is quite mind blowing.

I acknowledge that this virus is worrying and sometimes deadly, Tanker, so I make sure I stick to all the guidelines.  However I am not going to sit in my house cringing with fear not daring to go out or talk to people in case I catch it. Instead of media telling us how many folk have caught the virus and how many have died I would like the per capita figures and, separately, what percentage of those deaths have been in care homes.

Unless you have undergone testing and are awaiting the result, are in quarantine for 14 days or have been tested and received a negative result before the 14 days are up, you do not need to "sit in [your] house cringing with fear not daring to go out or talk to people in case [you] catch it".

All you, and everyone, has to do is maintain the 1.5m social distancing, wear a mask when unable to maintain social distancing such as in closed spaces like supermarkets (or when living in a mandated mask wearing area), wash your hands frequently and use appropriate hand sanitiser when out.

Its not that hard.

As for the numbers, there are many sites online where you can get all the detail you want from State based figures (numbers of tests conducted, positive reults, numbers in hospital and ICU, number of deaths and number recovered just for starters) and then the same for all the national details. Start with your local State/Territory Health Department and for the national numbers go to the Australian Department of Health website.

A few total infections per capita comparisons Triss ...

VICTORIA: 0.137% of population
AUSTRALIA: 0.059% of population
UNITED KINGDOM: 0.449% of population
UNITED STATES: 1.313% of population

I'm not "cringing at home" but by the same token, I'm bloody careful when out and even more so when returning to car and home re anti-infection measures.

As KSS says, you can get all the details you need on other sites.

Te other figure which is difficult to analyze at this stage is the number of people suffering long term effects from the virus. As the virus has not been around "long term" this is difficult to establish but will become clearer with time. Young people who think they won't  die from this virus and those who feel it is no different to a common cold need to know these figures.

I read on the ABC that three quarters of people who get this virus have been shown via MRI tests to have heart damage, regardless of how mild the symptoms were.

Thanks, KSS and RnR.  As I said I don’t cringe in fear but it’s up to us all to be sensible.
