Australian blood stocks plummet

Australia’s supply of donated blood is expected to drop to its lowest point since the beginning of the pandemic. Donations have nosedived over the past two years thanks to ongoing COVID restrictions.

The Australian Red Cross Lifeblood (ARCL) is calling for 17,5000 donors to help build supplies back up again, particularly those with A, O or B blood groups.

"There are patients in hospital right now who are relying on blood for cancer treatment, surgery, accidents, and complicated births,” says ARCL’s Cath Stone.

“Every blood donation can help to save up to three lives”

If you’d like to donate blood, check out ARCL’s website here.

I can understand there is a shortage in Blood supplies. A friend of mine's  son-in-law  has just had major surgery and was in theatre for over 10 hours. He had 14 units of blood and 2 more in Intensive Care. I use to give blood but am told I am too old now.

Perhaps people contemplating to have surgery should supply some of their own blood just in case ... I feel sure I would prefer to have my own blood.

When I had surgery a couple of years ago, I was low in Iron so had to have a top up with an infusion a couple of days before. I was told to go to the Hospital's chemist shop to pick up the infusion, I think it was a powder, it felt like it, and then up to the transfusion room where they mixed it with liquid and then into my arm. It's marvelous what they can do with blood today.
