Channel 9 News Monday

On C9 news on Monday there was a report on the CentreLink costs of immigrants and the figure ran into billions, and also the fact that 1in 4 immigrants were on disability pensions. I looked in vain in the following days paper to learn more but nothing was reported. Did anybody else see it and is there an internet link on it to find out more.

Thanks for that again Koko ;)

I got this off a post on another forum - very good explanation I thought so kept it on definition of a refugee against an economic migrant.

Before the arguments begin let us distinguish between a refugee and an economic migrant. If you flee a country for your own safety you are a refugee. If you continue your journey, passing through up to six other countries all of which provide safety and ultimately target the best country which also happens to be the most remote, then you become an economic migrant.

Immigration is one of the most important issues facing a country. The notion that it is too contentious to be publicly debated makes a mockery of democracy.

Some time back heard that both majors had agreed not to have immigration on their election platforms - now it has to be discussed as out in the open.

Ponder this is the country is so wealthy that we can take in these people by the thousand and put them on welfare or how are they going to live - then why are we told that the pensions and other welfare payments had to be kept down as not enough money for a decent rise?

I read on another forum also a post saying the figures were wrong as these Muslim migrants had not been here long enough to be on Age Pension. But remember the Lebanese came in in the 80's and so can be old enough to have gone back to Lebanon to live as we well know had to pay to rescue Lebanese/Aussies living there on the pension and bring them back here recently when they had their latest spat.

We also know that when they paid the grant last year to pensioners - 81 million went to overseas pensioners which did no good for our economy because Labor forgot to tell Centrelink not to pay it to overseas folk same with $900 and the Tax Office.
