Coles new self-serve checkout rules
Coles has changed its self-serve checkout rules in a bid to reduce theft at scanning points.
Just 12 months into a crackdown on checkout theft, Coles is now trialling a new 12-item limit on self-scanning checkouts.
Customers with more than 12 items will now have to use traditional belted checkout lanes.
The new rules come hot on the heels of research which revealed that people are more likely to steal when distanced from a human face.
Thefts usually occur in the form of people scanning more expensive fruit and vegetables as cheaper items – it’s unofficially called the ‘swipe everything as carrots’ scam.
This cheeky scam, along with the more commonly-known ‘five-finger discount’ is costing Coles up to $1.1 billion each year.
Around 10 per cent of shoppers of all ages have admitted that they cheat supermarkets at self-serve checkouts.

Have you ever employed the ‘swipe everything as carrots’ scam? What do you think of Coles’ new self-serve checkout rules?
I will continue to use normal checkouts. Not interested in self-serve.
It means a longer wait, but we always had to wait anyway, nothing has changed there.
What really gets up my nose though, is not the supermarket, but the customers, particularly the more mature women.
They appear to have no-one else to talk to, so they engage the checkout staff in a long useless conversation about their latest trip to the doctor etc. They are just oblivious to the long queue of people behind them wanting to get served and get out of the shop.
Secondly, I am about to murder the next woman who does not have their purse out of their huge useless handbag full of crap, and their money or card ready to pay. This ongoing problem just drives me demented. They can't find their purse, they have money scattered in different pockets, they can't find their credit or debit card, and on and on it goes. FFS, you are going shopping, you know you need your money ready to pay. When I line up at the register, I have my loyalty card and my credit card in my hand ready to pay as soon as they've put the last item through. How hard is it?
As for the packing problems, that is simple, I put all my items on the belt in the order I want them packed, and I have no problems. I also space them out in groups so they can't pick and choose what to scan next. Heavy things first, then the soft and breakables last. Usually I only have to warn them if they are about to put the soap or bleach in with the food, but most of them know not to do that anyway.
