Coles new self-serve checkout rules

Coles has changed its self-serve checkout rules in a bid to reduce theft at scanning points.

Just 12 months into a crackdown on checkout theft, Coles is now trialling a new 12-item limit on self-scanning checkouts.

Customers with more than 12 items will now have to use traditional belted checkout lanes.

The new rules come hot on the heels of research which revealed that people are more likely to steal when distanced from a human face.

Thefts usually occur in the form of people scanning more expensive fruit and vegetables as cheaper items – it’s unofficially called the ‘swipe everything as carrots’ scam.

This cheeky scam, along with the more commonly-known ‘five-finger discount’ is costing Coles up to $1.1 billion each year.

Around 10 per cent of shoppers of all ages have admitted that they cheat supermarkets at self-serve checkouts.

I will continue to use normal checkouts.  Not interested in self-serve.

It means a longer wait, but we always had to wait anyway, nothing has changed there.

What really gets up my nose though, is not the supermarket, but the customers, particularly the more mature women.

They appear to have no-one else to talk to, so they engage the checkout staff in a long useless conversation about their latest trip to the doctor etc.  They are just oblivious to the long queue of people behind them wanting to get served and get out of the shop.

Secondly, I am about to murder the next woman who does not have their purse out of their huge useless handbag full of crap, and their money or card ready to pay.  This ongoing problem just drives me demented.  They can't find their purse, they have money scattered in different pockets, they can't find their credit or debit card, and on and on it goes.  FFS, you are going shopping, you know you need your money ready to pay.  When I line up at the register, I have my loyalty card and my credit card in my hand ready to pay as soon as they've put the last item through.  How hard is it?

As for the packing problems, that is simple, I put all my items on the belt in the order I want them packed, and I have no problems.  I also space them out in groups so they can't pick and choose what to scan next.  Heavy things first, then the soft and breakables last.  Usually I only have to warn them if they are about to put the soap or bleach in with the food, but most of them know not to do that anyway.

I know what you mean johninmelb hahaha

Yes the scramble for money irritates the hell out of me as well.  I do not do big shops and I do a mental calculation of roughly what the cost will be and have the money ready in my hand when I go through a checkout where there is an operator.

As I have said before I prefer the self service for my shopping as I can be in and out very quickly and by doing so I am also freeing up a place in  the line for others who do not want want to use a self service checkout.

I don't go to Coles that much..........but sort out the groceries yes.  But even that doesn't help with some checkout operators. Boys and Girls.

I prefer my frozen and dairy items placed in the same bag though and the meat together.

I wish I had a $ for each time they look at Rhubarb, Swede, Parsnip and ask 'Whats this"?

As for chatting, I will just say a polite hello!  Or it is quiet today! if it is.....the usual reply is 'it was very busy earlier on'  I don't feel that is a long conversation.   It doesn't take much to be friendly to the person at the checkout.

Interestingly here in Oz the checkout staff have to stand for their whole shift, but in the UK you wouldn't get anyone standing, they have to be supplied with a seat.

Coles and Woolies supermarkets are screaming like school girls that shoppers are stealing billions of dollars of goods a year, enough money to pay for 85,000 staff according to the report.

Here's an idea for supermarkets, get rid of self checkouts and have regular checkouts, you will be lowering the unemployment rate and stopping theft. I talked to the manager of the local MyColes and he said he hates them but they are a way of cutting out staff and they are planning more.

I much prefer to go through a regular checkout and interact with people not a machine, who else hates self checkouts?

i have never used a self serve,   and no intention of doing so,    my coles isnt bad,  but they all need more more  maned checkouts,      the port melb, shop is the worst,   it is ALWAYS choc a bloc,    but only ever half the checkouts are maned,    supposed to be all these young ones out of work,  so they cant say they cant get staff,   not that i think its much of a job,   but it IS work,       i find AUDI is the worse,     i hardly ever go there as i cant stand the wait,   there is only ever ONE checkout open,     it frustrates the bejesus out of me,

These companies want to cut their costs at the expense of staff and customers.  Now they are whinging that they have met wiih a down side to their actions.

Boo Hoo, they have to admit they are not as smart as they would like to think they are.

I'll save my pity for the farmers they are ripping off.  Who's looking over their shoulders when they are negotiating those contracts?

Agree totally re people not having money or credit card handy.  I always pay cash and I mentally add up what the cost is and am rarely out by much more than 50cents or so.  Makes it so much quicker when you do this at the checkout.  My Aldi shop yesterday was about 4 items and I am sure I was through the checkout within 30seconds.   I use self service when I have a couple of items.  It suits me to do so as I do not want to wait ages in long lines.

I don't like the self serve check out, no one to chat to. On the rare occasions I go to the market I stand in the queue, chat to the ladies, crack a few jokes and when I have lightened their day they let me go up front anyway.
