Common decency

It is not possible for any person wishing to post anything in support of the current government in this forum unless they are ready for a tirade of abuse from a small group of people. The abuse involves ridicule, lies, name calling and personal comments even though we are all anonymous. The truth is the first casualty.

Can anybody explain why common decency and respect is not present in this forum?

My answer to ALL the trolling, bullying, rudeness and lies that go on not only on this forum but most(if not all social media) is to ensure that ALL posters can only join and post if they supply VERIFIED identity under their real names. No anonimity equals needing to be more careful what you post, as there may be real consequences.

Maybe it will mean that people will not be able to say things that they would not say face to face, as that would result in consequences!

Yep totally agree, people like bilby, NY19 (robiconda) foxy and twila would be facing jail time by now. Bring it on!

Then you might have to change your name from Pedro the Swift!

unfortunely om, political discussion mainly attracts the far left element, who like everybody else discussng politics considers themselves "middle of the road".

generally the frar lefties know very little or in some cases, virtually nothing concerning the big picture of things in general.

the people who have very little, or no understanding of the broad situation regarding politics, tend to support the left. many people who arent really happy with the current govt, still support them because of the low opinion they have of the left.

much of what these misguided know it alls "think", is usually based on emotional hysteria, and therefore, common sense as well as common decency and politeness all go out the window.

moderate conservatives like myself tend to be polite and reasonable, and will exchange views rather than ridicule other peoples views unless they are totally stupid, or will retaliate if attacked.

most moderates tend to not say anything though because they realise it is pointless trying to educate fools, like the noisy minority, who tend to be stupid as well as agressively unruly. they are the same people who see graffiti as "art" and many of them have probably spray canned graffiti themselves. (notice they dont do this "art" on their own walls or fences, but invariably always on other peoples', unless they live in housing commission rentals.

unfortunately, the pc assholes are invariably supported by forum management, and anybody who disagrees with the bs that pc enables to thrive, are often perceived to be "breaking laws" when in fact they arent.

but being rude, and name calling etc is tolerated by website management, so these scumbags who name call anybody who think for themselves, and doesnt blindly agree with the bullshit these same lowlifes spruke, risks the cowardly expulsion by management.

the name callers rarely, if ever, get expelled, no matter how rude and illogical they are.

so in answer to your query about being abused for supporting the current government, that is because the ignorant far left support the current opposition.

while i dont support the current government, i dont support the opposition either.

most people are like you om, they either support the coalition or labor. only a small percentage of us are like me, who will not vote for anybody who doesnt deserve their vote.

voting for somebody because you think their opponent is a bigger scumbag than the person you voted for is plain stupidity imho.

how can old man possibly be wrong when certain ignorant rude narrow minded know-nothings post crap like ?

"Yep totally agree, people like bilby, NY19 (robiconda) foxy and twila would be facing jail time by now. Bring it on!"

Some of the language they allow on this site is a bit much. I’m all for healthy debate but when people resort to crude insults to make a point, then I think there should be a code of conduct. In ‘real life’ I’m sure people are more polite, but on this site they can hide.

I actually don't agree with your sentiments Old Man. I have considered leaving this site many times because of the opposite.  Storng current government support that has spilled over into derision of anyone thinking differently.  But I like the trivia :-)

Correct Shelly53, without trivia, you might as well join the newest cult movement.

Ttrivia is fine, bullying as in the Class of 2013 should be treated with severe consequences

Common decency OM?  Have a look at how YOUR party behaves.  Not a shred of common decency in any one of them from what I can see and whenever Shorten tries to discuss Morrison and his media mates attack in the most abusinve vicious manner I have witnessed from any government in living history.

If YOUR government were half decent and debated the FACTS on their merit I'd give them a fair shake.  Sadly they are bastards running class war and they do not deserve our respect or to be treated for the low life rabble they are.  Sorry, thatey're the bare facts.

OM - perhaps you can begin by stating WHO you are. Are you a rich man looking after your own interests, a rusted on party hack or an ex Liberal Party MP?  That's the question.  Oh yes....by all means say 'there you are' but my post is not an emotional one but rather one to expose the truth and of disgust that ANY politician or political party could be so conflicted and badly behaved.

"Common decency"?  Yes we need some fo that.  Starting with those who support political parties of all sorts who are working agiainst the interests of our country.  May they rot in hell!

Hope you had an enjoyable Easter period.  You would have done better to leave this alone though.  Cheers.

Thanks MICK, my post is not how a political party behaves, just those who post in this forum. I like how your opinion of a government makes them all bastards and a low life rabble and then you claim that those are facts.

But, moving on, does it matter who I am? Do I need to declare to all my personal details just to make you happy? Does a concerned citizen who believes that Labor is not good for this great country have to be a political hack? Thank you for answering the original question in the affirmative; yes we do need some common decency in this forum.

There you go Mick, just proving Old Man's point.

The lack of common decency and respect is not confined to any one political party or their adherents. Sometimes however a simple statement based upon fact can seem, to some, to be lacking in decency because that fact is contrary to their own firmly held belief.

We seem to live in a bubble of social media where beliefs are held to be inviolate against simple facts. A belief is a belief because it cannot be proved to be true and is therefore not a fact. Too many people get agitated because they believe that they are in the right and a contrary statement must therefore be wrong.

Perhaps some of the issues that cause the most controversy could be wiped out if political advertising and statements had to conform with the same rules as commercial advertising, i.e. they must be true and factual. In this election time truth has been the first casualty. They are all at it and it is downright annoying but unfortunately some welded on political supporters firmly belief that their side is sqeaky clean and it that other lot that are deceitful and cannot be trusted.

It is such a pity that so many people have that attitude and get themselves all worked up about that "other lot" and this then tends to display the lack of common decency and respect we see in these posts including on this topic.

Well said and so true

That's a great post Tom. I fully support that political posts should be TRUE AND FACTUAL.  Of course then you'll get parties splitting hairs (thing Shorten's cancer funding with Greg Hunt coming after him with party BS) and next it'll end up as a who said what.

You'll never get that unless there are significant fines and an umpire not controlled by either side of politics to enforce the rules.

I believe I have called for a FEDERAL ICAC in that capacity.  For sure we need somthing to stop the right wing propaganda media from doing its dirty work and destroying our democracy in name only.

Oh, I missed the point about this present government and its supporters under attack. I have found the opposite to be true. Crude names for Bill Shorten e.g. and I am not repeating those.

We should use people’s correct names for a start.

People like Pauline Hanson and Tony Abbott although unrespecting of others still should not be named incorrectly or have swear words applied, etc.

As for using derogatory terms for people making comments on here, some are disgraceful, like calling pensioners, ‘leaners,’ a term from the unkind party or saying someone is a ‘greedy pensioner’ or similar.

Challenging veracity is okay so long as it is done minus the name calling and put downs. State evidence not suppositions!

Be kind like the NZ PM!

What Morrison calls Shorten is nothing short of hatred out to words. One often hears the slogans ("BIll shick Bill", etc.) to which Shorten has not come back in like.

I always find it amusing when the rusted on right wing supporters claim victim status as they abuse everyone who opposes them.  OM appears to be trying it on.  That will not earn him a lot of respect.  Honesty, facts and a genuine discussion of the many issue will.  That you rarely get from this poster.

Not just political comments, try mentioning the word vegan and see how you get attacked. We need to get back to discussion and stop the personal attacks on any minority group as well. All major groups of people once were a minority group.

Vegan?  Who cares?

You may be referring to what Vegans did last week when they invaded farms and stile stock as well as chained themselves to various places to disrupt people from going about their daily lives.

I don't think Vegans deserve any respect for their behaviour.  Meat eaters respect their right to not eat meat byt of course Vegans demand meat eaters should not eat meat.  Tell me about minority groups!

Mick, you took the bait, see what I mean if you mention the word vegan.

Did not take any bait but just relating that people are not after your blood (sic) other than pointing out which side of your argument is the problem.  I personally done give a tinkers for the Vegan Movement as I see it as a group of rednecks wanting to tell billions of people what they have to eat.

There you go again Mick attacking a minority group, who are not doing anything to physically hurt people but get attacked as if they are. They are not rednecks, isn't that the term used for outback rodeo meat eating people?

Politics means something different to everyone, therefore, everyone should have the common decency to accept that fact and have the common decency not to attack other voters for their opinions. Senseless making so much fuss about the pollies, they won't thank you for it, better to have a good relationship with a mate than to lay into each other over which nose should or should not be in the trough.

For me..common decency means applying the Golden Rule as much as is humanly possible..

“Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.”

hahahahahaaa - now that's FUNNY coming from YOU !!!

Best you start heeding your own advice??  You might be a nicer person!

I wrote where "humanly possible"...

In your case nothing is humanly possible :(

... talking about YOU "sweetheart" lol - NOT me!!

HAHA, welll said Sophie!

Is Scott Morrison civil? He said today of social media critics (of him):

These grubs are gutless and keyboard warriors in their mother's basement trying to make heroes of themselves."

Hmmm, can he not take the heat? I find it curious that he said “mother’s basement”. Why not “father’s basement” or “parent’s basement”? Is he being unconsciously sexist? He is likening the critics to children and perhaps thinks the term “mother” bestows upon them greater non-significance?

As usual, you lie and twist everything. Why did you not print the entire story? Here it is:

"I mean, it's disgusting. Australians are bigger than that. And I know that the great majority of Australians are bigger than that. These grubs are gutless and keyboard warriors in their mother's basement trying to make heroes of themselves."

Mr Morrison also condemned some anti-Adani protesters who had used social media to liken working for the proposed Queensland coal mine to being under the control of Nazi Germany..read the rest here:

Being a fan of rugby and rap won’t win the happy clapper the election.

Sigh, will she never learn :(

one of the scumbags that om is referring to in this topic posted

Quote bilby: :years ago i, along with everybody else in the carriage, had the same problem on the train in melbourne, with 2 muslim women wearing thick smelly burqas with factory chemical smells emanating from them. they had no problem getting a seat as  nobody wanted to be near them, and some people  opted to stand away rather than sit close to them.

Back with the racist comments pete/brocky/lothario??????

this is an example of the rudeness and ignorance, and dishonest of the people he is talking about.

a) rudeness as in not respecting somebody else's right to freedom of speech.

b) stating a factual occurrence is "racist"?

c) what "race" was i referring to einstein?

d) lying in that i have never used any nic on this forum other than the one i am using now

given that his whole comment was a blatant attack on my right to freedom of speech, as well as telling lies about me attacking somebody because of their race, and lying about me having other nics, old man is a hundred percent right.

unfortunately for you om, scumbags like abe will always be there to provide rudness, ignorance, and disgrace to our society .....

Obviously bilby (aka pete/brocky/lothario) YLC Admin must have thought your disgusting racist talk was not classed as freedom of speech, because they banned you today and you rejoined this evening.

Fortunately you are their problem, not mine.

Point in fact, racist comments like yours only serve to help the terrorists to do their job with a feeling of justification.

you should sue your doctor, because your meds arent working(you are still an idiot)

and why do you have this obsession about claiming i use other nics?

sad news for ya abe - the best you can ever hope to achieve in your worthless existence, is possibly having that strange mental disorder named after you.

No way is Bilby Pete/Brocky/Lothario. You have not been paying attention Abe.

Pay close attention and you will get a fair idea of who is who.

... of course Abe "isn't paying attention"! Far too busy ranting raving and abusing people in his usual charismatic way!

Who cares who the bugger is? He or she is obviously deranged, lies in a hospital bed, throwing bedpans at the nurses.

Nope I do not pay any particular attention to posters, why should I, nothing to see.

You seriously need to stop making yourself look "super stupid" ok? Cause the people who have some idea about bilby are ROFL their FAO ................

..... so ....be a good lil "yellow thingy" and just shove off!!  I really don't care too much what you think/say either!  Byeeeeeee .....dont let the door hit ya' on the way out!!

sdwhat a joke you are ABE,    you are obsssessed with BROCKY,   PETE,    LOTHARIO,    your poor tiny pea brain is working overtime,   and in the WRONG direction,    go find a hobby and forget about the BOYS,    believe me,   they dont think of you,  lol

Time you got out of that hammock and got some exercise then you wont have trouble getting in and out of your front door

As others have said it appears that some can't be civil no matter what the subject, so political discussions have no chance at all.

I hear people say on occasion that they only ever argue with facts. The trouble with discussions about politics is that it invariably comes down to opinions rather than facts.

Yes, I understand there are indisputable facts that either side can trot out, but most of us posting happily away have no idea of what goes on in the background behind those 'facts'.  They are mostly taken out of context, by both sides, to suit their own agenda.  Yes, discussions should be civil, but claiming to only ever argue with facts rather than opinions is in itself at the very least a self-delusion.

I admit leaning to the left, so every fact trotted out that puts a left politician in the wrong could probably be (if I could be bothered) countered by a similar transgression on the right of politics.  The same goes for the good things either side might do.  And even that comes down to opinions, what I think of as being a good thing, might very well not be your opinion, and vice versa.

Funnily enough most of my real life friends happen to be right-leaning, go figure.  Some of them go so far as to threaten to leave the country if Labor gets in. They never do incidentally.

They never quite understand where I am coming from, to be honest.  They say things like, "You must be really happy now," when my 'side' wins.    But while I do like my 'side' to win, (don't we all) I don't feel the same way about their 'side' as they seem to feel about mine.  The sky never falls in if my side is relegated to the opposition benches.  I just keep trundling along one foot in front of the other just like I've always done.  I don't suddenly feel the need to leave the country.

Both sides sometimes make mistakes and both sides sometimes get it right.   Just like the rest of us, I suppose.

It is sometimes actually a relief when my 'side' doesn't win.  I no longer get bombarded with emails about what the Government is doing wrong, because now, of course, they are perfect.  LOL.
