David Bowie dead aged 69, after battle with cancer

The music world has been rocked by the news that David Bowie has died after an 18-month battle with cancer. Bowie, who was married to supermodel Iman, enjoyed an eclectic music career and even dipped his toe into the acting world. He had just released his 25th album, Blackstar, on 8 January, which was his birthday.

A statement posted on the star's site said, "David Bowie died peacefully today surrounded by his family after a courageous 18 month battle with cancer. While many of you will share in this loss, we ask that you respect the family’s privacy during their time of grief."

Vale David Bowie

.......I'm truly sorry that some people choose to make a "mockery" out of such a sad situation!  Disgusting!

Agreed Foxy.

It is sad when a star is gone. RIP Davie Bowie aka David Jones. :(

Memories of many a mis-spent night in the local disco came flooding back on hearing the news of David Bowie's seemingly sudden death. Rebel rebel, the Jean Genie, starman, space oddity, heros, changes, life on mars........Aaah those were the days.......

We now know it was liver cancer - very tough. But his legacy will live on through his music. Like it or not, David Bowie paved the way for many of today's musicians and changed the music industry forever.

Thank you for the music David Bowie.

.... just on a lighter note .....when the song "Diamond Dog" was released and made the charts ......there were also gorgeous little black T-shirts (short sleeves) with the face of a dog on them - all done in little "sparkly diamonte' jewels"....... I had one!  Looked great with jeans! Had it for years!

Also - heard today on the news - that anyone who has an Andy Warhol painting of David Bowie - going price - approx. $20 - 25 MILLION  !!!   Nice!  :-)

We all have to go sometime but if you are a heavy smoking bisexual alchoholic fruitcake then your time is sooner rather than later.

Whether we agree with a persons life choices or not, no one deserves to get cancer or any other horrid disease.

R.I.P David Bowie. You will live on through your music.

Fortunatly this drug using nutter who seemed intent on lowering his life expectancy with all his bad habits was not looked after by the medicare system here in OZ. People like him who abuse their bodies should have to pay for treatment and save the tax payer a fortune thus giving help to those who have led a good life.

Why do you babble so? Perhaps the Australian sun has gone to your head. David Bowie is worth over $230m and his wife of twenty four years earns $25m a year from her fashion business. How much do you earn Campbell?

quote ? "David Bowie is worth over $230m"

Money is useless if you cannot spend it - and I think it would be very difficult for him to do so.

I have often said "Shrouds have no pockets"

Thea

I'm retired and I do not earn but recieve a good income from many investments.

I have problems spending all my income and the bank account keeps rising so I give some away many times a year to those in need.

I still say if you abuse your body you pay for it. Not the taxpayer.

Totally agree with you Campbell...the taxpayer should not have to pay for those who abuse their bodies or the system.

Not arguing that point...however... David Bowie lives in the UK and I strongly suspect he's not on national health.

David Bowie has lived in Manhattan New York for many years?  Prior to that - lived in Berlin ....he has not lived in the U.K. for ages.........had homes in many places!

His funeral will be held in New York.........

You're right Foxy...haven't kept up with details about him...I believe he was cremated in  New York today (as you mentioned).

Many probably know the lyrics of David Bowie's song "Space Oddity"...but like me many may not have realised what he meant when he wrote the song. Found this today on the internet and it makes interesting reading. Here are the lyrics first...then what Bowie meant...it's just beautiful..

Ground Control to Major Tom
Ground Control to Major Tom
Take your protein pills and put your helmet on
Ground Control to Major Tom (Ten, Nine, Eight, Seven, Six)
Commencing countdown, engines on (Five, Four, Three)
Check ignition and may God's love be with you (Two, One, Liftoff)

This is Ground Control to Major Tom
You've really made the grade
And the papers want to know whose shirts you wear
Now it's time to leave the capsule if you dare
"This is Major Tom to Ground Control
I'm stepping through the door
And I'm floating in a most peculiar way
And the stars look very different today
For here
Am I sitting in a tin can
Far above the world
Planet Earth is blue
And there's nothing I can do

Though I'm past one hundred thousand miles
I'm feeling very still
And I think my spaceship knows which way to go
Tell my wife I love her very much she knows
Ground Control to Major Tom
Your circuit's dead, there's something wrong
Can you hear me, Major Tom?
Can you hear me, Major Tom?
Can you hear me, Major Tom?
Can you "Here am I floating round my tin can
Far above the Moon
Planet Earth is blue
And there's nothing I can do."

"This song is about alienation and distancing yourself away from people by getting so lost in your mind that you're high up above everyone else. It's about becoming cynical and seeing the world as a sad place but being unable to communicate with anyone about it. "Planet earth is blue and there's nothing I can do" - he realizes there's nothing he can do about all of the problems he sees in the world.

"Can you hear me Major Tom? Can you hear me Major Tom?" - He's lost communication with those on the ground (i.e. in reality). "The papers want to know who's shirts you wear" - something small and insignificant normal people would worry about seems so small and unimportant to this man metaphorically up in space looking down on the world. "The stars look very different today" - the more you spend time in your mind thinking about things, the more your perception of everything will change."

I always find those who push their meagre qualifications in your face...really...don't have any talent...and are just trying to impress....living a fantasy.

A PhD is hardly "meagre". Undoubtedly you don't have one...

I am entering this conversation now because... you seem to be belittling Kings College...obviously... you have no idea of its history or reputation.

Rubbish! I'm commenting on their DMA degree, not on King's College.

I went to Oxford which is even older...founded in 1167.

... As a cleaner, I suspect.

At Oxford... they wipe their a**** with PhD these days...some people have more than one you see...

Well, you see, I am one such person: PhDs in music and pure mathematics...
