Does coconut oil really work?

You've probably all heard the hype surrounding coconut oil and its many potential uses and benefits. From sorting out ratty hair to shaving and cleaning teeth, coconut has been hailed as a miracle nut/fruit/seed/whatever.

Allie White from Mind Body Green recently put coconut oil through the wringer, trying it out 14 different ways in which it has been hailed as a cure or remedy. Amazingly, in 10 of the 14 trials, she gave it the big thumbs up.

Do you use coconut oil for anything? How do you think it performs? What's the way you most recommend using it?

It is throughly recommended as a sexual lubricant.

Glad you enjoy the taste too Pete

I just love the taste of coconut and use it when I need to fry or bake something to get that nice golden brown colouring with yummy taste.

I prefer it to margarines and oils which often have chemicals sprayed on them during their growth.

Quote Pete "It is throughly recommended as a sexual lubricant."

A warning should be added that if coconut oil is used with latex condoms, the condom breaks down and this could render the condom useless..

Strange edit moderator

One of my favourite uses is definitely the Coconut Skin Butter, love the smell, great on hands.

Coconut Yoghurt has become very popular too, made with Cows milk or for Vegetarians/ Vegans can be made entirely dairy free with probiotics!

It's also good for putting a coating on your stainless pans after you cook with them.

Rubbish

Coconut oil is a true superfood and yes it works for countless things. However to get full benefits use virgin coconut oil.

PS: glad to see it works for you Pete for your "special" use..

Yes I use virgin coconut oil.  Supposed to help prevent Alzheimers too.

If you heat Light margarine in the frypan it looks gross. Looks like glossy melted plastic.  I would never buy Light Margarine ever again.  Tried it once.

If a recipe calls for oil I use coconut, peanut or Olive oil with some butter in it.

..and diabetes, has a positive effect on blood sugar levels!

I thought alcohol was a sexual lubricant

I will start drinking this coconut oil and see what it does

Meant to say earlier I also use Rice Bran Oil, a new favourite plus Macadamia Oil.

There are so many nice oils to use now that are much healthier for you and give foods a different taste when you use them.

Sounds as if you lead a very healthy lifestyle Sandi, thumbs up!

The fact that you are all takling about this makes me believe you are all grasping at straws to extend your miserable worthless lives.

Escape into the real world and become people again.

Who wants to be in the real world with you, I like my alien world

Coconut oil increase metabolism

Keeps you skinny

Coconut oil has a higher smoking point But you should cook you steaks (grass fed) slowly to avoid glysation . ( browning)

Pete - "Browning" is known as caramelization.

Believe the word "glysation" does not exist. You are thinking of glycation (sometimes called non-enzymatic glycosylation) which is the result of  bonding a protein or lipid molecule with a sugar molecule, such as fructose or glucose without the controling action of an enzyme..

LOL I used to use for sun baking,

However I know that the Coconut palm is a very useful plant and serves so many purposes,    I have also used Copha.

Might try the Oil, not that I deep fry these days, I use a light amount of Olive Oil when needed

Coconut oil is better than Olive oil as it has a higher Smoking point . Olive oil goes rancid at a lower temperature. Don't ever use vegetable oil..

For heaven's sake, get your darn facts right before you post Pete.

Although coconut oil is good for health, olive oil is the better oil for heart health.

Not when you heat it..

Unrefined olive oil has a lower smoke point than unrefined coconut oil and thus isn’t the ideal oil for higher temperatures. Oils can break down beyond their smoke points which starts to change the molecular structure and integrity of the oil.

Who said anything about heating it??

The process of heating oils can cause the fats to become carcinogenic (any oil) which means causes CANCER!  Heating causes enzymes to be destroyed, proteins are denatured, fats become carcinogenic, carbohydrates (sugars) become caramelized, vitamins and minerals become less available, and water is eliminated.

The safer way is not to eat fried foods regularly, but when you do, use canola oil..

Plan B

That is very poor advise , do not ever use Canola oil . It is a GMO product made from Rapeseed oil and is Hydrodinated even its fumes are carcinogetitic .

Why is Canola Oil Bad for You?

Originally, rapeseed oil may not have had so many negative health effects. But for two main reasons, most canola oil today is harmful to your body:

1. Over 90 percent of canola oil is genetically modified

2. Canola oil is a partially hydrogenated oil

It’s for these two reasons that I recommend you switch to healthier oil alternatives that I list at the conclusion of this article.

What can it do to you? There have been NO long-term, viable studies done on GMO canola oil, but there are reports that it has caused many kidney, liver and neurological health issues. This would make sense since there are other reports that GMO products like corn and soy also can cause negative health effects.

BS as usual.

Note: I do not give advice, I make comments...

Plan B I believe Copha is unique to Australia and is hydrodinated Coconut oil . I would not use anything hydrogenated
