History made in the Oscars

Not only was the South Korean film ‘Parasite’ the first foreign-language movie to win the biggest award at the Oscars, but it also won best original screenplay, best international film and best director. It seems Hollywood is finally opening its pearly gates to the idea of reading subtitles, and it’s paying off.

Fan favourite Natalie Portman, who debuted in Hollywood at age 12, has subtly called out the sexist nature of the awards ceremony, wearing a coat embroidered with the names of all the female directors who had been overlooked. This isn’t the first time Portman has called out social injustice on the big stage. In 2018 she dropper her infamous “and here are the all-male nominees” line when announcing the Best Director nominees at the Golden Globes.

Joaquin Phoenix went off script with his expectance speech for his role as the Joker, calling out social injustices and taking a stab at the meat industry: “Whether we’re talking about gender inequality or racism or queer rights or indigenous rights or animal rights, we’re talking about the fight against injustice. We’re talking about the fight against the belief that one nation, one people, one race, one gender or one species has the right to dominate, control and use and exploit another with impunity.”

Did you watch the Oscars? What would you say if you had an audience of 29.6 million people listening?
