It’s only an opinion

YOURLifeChoices website loves the strong debate occurring on the site, but we have received a few comments and emails this week about how our political views cloud the issues. Hopefully the following will help clarify why we do what we do:

The majority of articles on YOURLifeChoices are straightforward factual reporting of what is happening in the topics of health, wealth, travel, work and technology. We also have our daily news article, which again, is based on factual reporting from mainstream media outlets across the world.

As a means to generate discussion and debate, each one of us takes a turn at providing an opinion on that day’s news article. This is exactly what it is, the opinion of that person. So blogs are written by Drew, Rachel, Debbie, David and Kaye. Drew's have tended to express a more conservative point of view, Debbie’s are more down the middle and Rachel and Kaye are generally described as leftist leaning. That is fine with the writers concerned. It is probably worth reading one of the hundreds of blogs posted thus far to see the range of opinion that has been featured.

This is not one-sided and we encourage our members to share their opinions so all can be featured and people can make up their own minds, as happens in a working democracy. So please keep commenting - as long as remarks are not abusive or derogatory about others, we will continue to publish. We often find remarks seem biased, but that of course depends on whether you are on the fence, or on one or the other side of it.

Thanks Debbie and well said ............clay

Thanks for that, however there is a definite perception that any criticism made by the editorial staff is usually directed at coalition policies. Rarely do we read negative comments about the governments failings, quit the opposite.

So I am not the only one who has noticed - and objects to - your use of this public

medium to push a private political agenda (against the current Australian Government).

There have been examples of "PUSH-polling"  - which means that a statement about some news item or government policy is published - then attach a poll question is attached ostensibly to survey readers true opinions on the item -

But the Poll Question is biased to return results slanted towards a desired .

I find this offensive on several counts (1) "Push-polling" treats me with contempt - it assumes I am gullible and too stupid to notice that the question is biased

(2) Using an "info-magazine" to covertly promote an anti-government (or pro-Liberal Party) agenda is more than distasteful, it harms the foundations of democracy.

  ............  BRENDA

It is most refreshing to a balanced blog rather than the one sided right wing media we have in Australia. It is no accident that Rupert Murdoch was the keynote speaker at the Institue of Public Affairs recent anniversary dinner. This dinner was very well attended to those from the right wing of politics who were fulsome in their praise of Mr Murdoch which is not surprising given the bias of his media outlets.

This has tended to make those with right wing leanings believe that any criticsm of the Liberal Party is blasphemy. A centre of the road opinion is also considered by the Conservatives to be ALP inspired.

Both parties have a lot to answer for with both sides using misinformation, lies and deceit to further their own ends. I do think it is fair to say the the Liberal Party is the party of business and the wealthy while the ALP was once the party of Social Justice. Both parties have in fact moved to the Right and we the ordinary person in the street have been ignored. We still live in the world where the rich get richer and the rest of us get by as best we can.

I agree Davewatto.  I have noticed that the blogs are usually pro government, and now I see what direction the writers take, I am not surprised.  I dont believe Life Choices bloggers should be so markedly in any one direction as this is meant to be an article to inform us, not personal opinions.

Parliament?!  Government?! Both sides ... and in between!

Where is a "Guy Fawkes" when we need one ... metaphorically speaking (sort of), of course.

It never ceases to amaze me when Labor supporters talk about the biased media - how they are always picking on the Labor government.  Hells bells, blind Freddy knows what a total mess they have made of this country yet they still keep calling foul about the Murdoch media.  If they didn't mess up so often, their bungled policies wouldn't be reported.  Do they seriously expect the media to say that all their mistakes are nothing to worry about?

Raising a topic on govt policy or opposition policy will invite questions of bias no matter how its presented . YLC generally has a good go at presenting views from both sides rather than an op ed giving only one . We are all biased to some extent and see what we want to see . I would have thought the articles were pro the opposition but I guess thats my own bias .

Politics is an area where I do advocate an open mind.  For some so devout about one party or the other they want their party in all the time which of course would be no different to totalitarianism.  Strong government needs a strong (as opposed to constant negativity) Opposition.   When one party stays in too long they get stale and think they can never be moved. We saw that with the Howard government and we have it here in Tasmania with a Labor Party, albeit dependent on the Greens which brings its own problems.

No one party has all the answers.   That is the reality.  I prefer to remain apolitical and a thinking voter.  Our nation deserves that surely??

Don't know if this will be "posted" but this poor older lady just cannot absorb all the wonderful "words of wisdom" from the learned members of Life Choices!  I do thank the editors for all their valuable info but I have not the time or fortitude to read let alone absorb the hundreds of blogs that appear.   This was particularly evident when they referred to "same-sex marriage" or whatever it was called.

I have very much enjoyed the site to date.  Just don't let it get beyond the average person's grey matter! LOL
