Labor Shadow Foreign Affairs Minister

Penny Wong replaced Tanya Plibersek...wonder how Tanya is taking it.  I do not think Education is step up at all.

Tanya does a good job no matter what portfolio and is well placed as a future leader. You do not think education is important for Labor Radish ?

The plum job beside being PM is Foreign Affairs.  It has always been regarded as that.  I am not saying Education or any other portfolio is less important.

I would have thought the most liked job apart from PM would be treasurer but yes Foreign affairs is up there but also education and health.

Some of the others should not be thought of as lesser as they are important to different people (e.g. environment)

I disagree Radish. The treasurer is usually seen as next in line for PM or equal of importance to the govt and its standing.

WRONG

Well there you go ...we disagree.:)

However, here is a little excerpt from an article a few years back

Vacancy speculation mounts ahead of reshuffleBy chief political correspondent Emma Griffiths

Labor frontbencher Stephen Conroy has rejected claims that the party's "faceless men" are choosing candidates for the New South Wales Senate vacancy and the plum job of foreign affairs minister.

All that means is that Foreign Affairs is a plum job according to the journo, Emma Griffiths. Defence is seen as a bit of a graveyard for som reason while treasurer is seen as important, Howard, Keating, Costello. Foreign affairs is free range in a way and the rest are domestic concerns which carry more importance by the public.

Education is where all the biggest battles will soon take place with many changes to HECS and the way it is repaid being mooted by the Turnbull government. Labor has put its best person into the role for the contest.

Pepe, Foreign Affairs Minister might be a plum job but Shadow Minister for Foreign Affairs is probably not as important as shadow ministry in domestic portfolios that affect our citizens more directly like education, health and welfare.

It's long been the view of the Liberal side of politics that Education in a minor ministry. John Howard once rejected it as an insult.

Sad for the future of the country.

I actually think it's a bit of a shame that outstanding Penny Wong has been given the shadow Foreign Affairs Ministry because there won't be much she can get her teeth into. However if Trump becomes US president and the world dives into even more chaos she may have a valuable role to play.

Yes. Given the risk that Trump will go all the way, and also given the fragility of the new Liberal government, it might be good to have a highly competent and experienced person in that Foreign Affairs role, in case Labor gets to govern in a bit of a hurry at some stage during the next three years.

I reckon that's on the cards.

Labor’s deputy leader Tanya Plibersek is to take the frontline shadow ministry of education, including both schools and higher education, in Bill Shorten’s reshuffle announced on Saturday.

Many in Labor have been anxious for the popular Plibersek to switch from foreign affairs to a major domestic job, where she can do more of the policy heavy lifting and use her constant access to the media to maximum advantage.

Yes, that's a move that makes sense
