Last year the second hottest on record

Last year was the second hottest year on record, cementing the last decade as the hottest on record globally, as climate change continues to accelerate.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has confirmed the global average temperature for 2020 was +0.98°C above the 20th century average, and only 0.02?C shy of the previous record set in 2016.

“It’s remarkable that despite La Niña conditions, 2020 was the second hottest year on record,” said Climate Council expert, Professor Will Steffen.

“What it’s telling us is that climate change is driving very rapid warming trends and worsening the impacts of natural variability events. This sets off yet another alarm bell to the climate change siren,” he said.

“Right now, we are on track for catastrophic climate change of 3°C of heating and maybe more. At just over 1°C of heating, we are already paying a serious price, as we have seen with the recent Black Summer bushfires, prolonged drought, and the third mass bleaching of the Great Barrier Reef in five years," said Prof. Steffen.

“Year after year, decade after decade, temperature records continue to tumble because we continue to burn coal, oil and gas. It must stop,” he said.

Prof. Steffen said he was encouraged to see state and territory governments stepping up their climate commitments and action, as well as Australia’s major trading partners and many leading businesses and sectors.

“We all need to step up - and fast. 2021 needs to be a year of climate action because failure is not an option,” he said.

Are you worried at the speed with which the planet seems to be warming? Do you think it might be too late to take action?

I dislike the reports regarding "weather" that mislead some folks when discussing "climate". One year of different is not evidence of a trend. However there is more than enough clear evidence of the nasty trend, which our Federal Govt might now have to finally acknowledge, or face the consequences.

As usual, we as a country will wait until it is too late to act. It is the "Stopsign" effect - wait until someone is killed before going to the expense of putting in a sign. Bushfire, Covid, etc etc... why do people vote for this lot? (I know why - it's the money. Got to get the priorities right...)

I am very worried about the rapid pace of warming. I have confidence that we can develop technologies and practices to eventually arrest this. What I don't have such confidence in is the political willingness from political leaders to follow the advice to do so.

Sadly, politicians mostly think short-term as well as being beholden financially to those companies which, and individuals who, are making money now, "fiddling while Rome burns".

The "experts" tell us of the minute temp changes, and global warming and the lie of the results of sea level rises, if you look at the horizon in almost any country and you can see further more clearly than ever before, except for china. china has been a big liar when they say that Australians per had of population has the worst pollution record of anywhere in the world, go to china and see if you can see across the street and breathe their thick and rotten air.

The problem if we sell coal to china and they burn it the pollution levels that this causes comes back to Australia's record, not chinas. Our government knows this but won't admit it, it is a fact. Research it.

Human activity as far as pollution has changed for the better over the years, Climate change is cyclic over the millions of years.

What do the "experts want each person to do except feel guilty about it all, very quiet on that subject.

I always maintain that the older I get the more normal the weather is, We have been there before on a regular cycle, even for the last hundreds of thousands of years.

The sea level rises at least in the smaller pacific islands are the result of rising and falling of the islands them selves, Ask Bob Brown about the dramatic sea level rise in Hobart harbor a few years ago, something like 170 mm almost over night, not anywhere else in the world , just Hobart harbor, he was caught out by the news that they installed a more accurate seal level gauge.

As sea ice melts the sea level should drop, as the land ice melts it makes up for the loss of level.

Check why the sea level measurement at Perth and Fremantle WA are not taken into consideration with the world average, because the land at both places is rising and falling over time.

Stop building big city's, they only create extra heat by paving over the natural ground and destroying the vegetation.

Have serious thoughts about these statements and research them your selves.

Our bushfires and floods are worse because greedy councils and government allow building on land that was always flood and fire risky, All for the big dollar.

We need to ask Prof. Steffen about these statements, he probably had a vested interest in providing his statements.

“Year after year, decade after decade, temperature records continue to
tumble because we continue to burn coal, oil and gas. It must stop,”
he
said. What does he recommend would be an alternative, lets try nuclear. stop all transport, have candles and no cooking, lets get a couple of farting cows per household, and a horse and sulky.

The main problem is the overpopulation of the world.
