All very confusing at times PlanB.

Hopefully things will improve with Australia’s latest food labelling laws which become mandatory next month, 1 July 2018.

The Australian Government has introduced a new country of origin food labelling system, which commenced on 1 July 2016. Under the new system, country of origin labelling requirements come under Australian Consumer Law. Businesses have two years to change their food labels to comply with the new law before it becomes mandatory on 1 July 2018.

Yes RnR and they were supposed to be using these labels up till now as they had 2 years to get rid of the old ones -- I think I have seen ONE label  like this and even when they are law it really doesn't tell us where they come from just the %

All this time NZ has been dishonest and selling stuff is grown in hell knows where -- and even most of the managers in the likes of woolies and Coles etc had NO idea they were allowed to re-label -- and got a shock when I told them ages ago.

And MADE OR PACKED IN AUST means NOTHING as it  could be just packed here and grown anywhere it has to say GROWN AND OWNED in AUSSIE

PlanB.  I recall media reports a few months ago advising that certain Tasmanian salmon growers send their product to China for packaging.  The frozen product is returned to Australia within a 3 month period.  In this case "Australian Grown and Owned" is accurate but misleading and inadequate.  An overseas 'packaged' item should also identify the country where the item is processed as this could reasonably be a critical consideration for consumers.

I suspect the real problem is with food GROWN in China as it has heavy metals in it.  So WHY is this food not being tested and WHO is being protected?  Like so mych business in this country the crooks in suits normally make electoral donations and are left alone.  The citizens of our country then suffer.  Who cares????????  And why is the system not changed????????

I bought a jar of Cottees strawberry jam from Woolies & after reading the label:

Made in New Zealand from local & imported ingredients.

Packed for Heinz.I normally refuse to buy Heinz products anymore due to their chinese produce connections.

Boy was that a let down. Always assumed Cottees was an Aussie company but no Aussie produce in this product.Never again!

Watch the frozen peas.  Same deal.

We normally buy canned tomatoes under the label of "product of Italy".

Anybody know if these are legit or otherwise.

Well Mick why buy things grown in Italy?   Why not support Aussie farmers?

Wha??? Very unAustralian!!

It does not matter what food item it is, is most likely grown in China! They also use sewerage matter as one of their fertilizers on some crops. There are other Asian countries that do the same. What happens is this, grown in China, for example, then sent to New Zealand to be processed, packaged and sent to Australia.

Why does the Government allow this to happen? There is a problem with fruits and nuts grown in Europe also. Does the Government test ALL imported food items before being sold in Australia?

NO ronloby, they do NOT test  not even from places that are full of radiation

I'll have you know that during the RBA Govs speech at the press club recently he mentioned that our food productivity had grown (no pun intended) by 3.6%. That is fantastic and means that our farmers are making a valuable contribution to the GDP and balance of trade, because of the FTAs. Pretty soon we'll need more 457s for foreign farm hands.
