Nova Peris

What a waste of time that was by Julia Gillard in using her "Captain's Pick" to install Nova Peris.

Peris was not even a member of the Labor Party at the time!

Rumour has it she will not be contesting the next Senate election and will be getting a seat on the AFL Board or something like that.

Nova was totally out of her depth.  I would be fuming if I was the previous occupier of the Seat , Trish Crossin, who was ousted to make way for Nova.  She apparently received a phone call from Julia Gillard the night beforepre-selection and was told she was  not being pre-selection but Nova was.

It will be interesting to see if Trish has another go at the Seat.

Thea, is that right? Didnt even tell Bill Shorten? That is telling.

Telling of what? That she preferred communicating with women? I would think that is quite normal in her culture.

Frank

More one liner statements about nothing.... come on man, spit it out.  You don't have to be continually bumping up Thea/Fleur... she can handle it!

Really.... come on now.  I have every confidence in your intellect, don't let them dumb you down!

I remember thinking at the time of the Nova Peris appointment by Captain's pick.

She must have been aware of the resentment of Trish Crossin and some members of the local branch of the party.

I thought she should have declined the offer.

Tedwalker

An opportunity to do good things for her people and constituancy would not allow her to decline such an offer.

Being able to handle the stress of political (and in my opinion somewhat racists) opponents from other parties that are hell bent on giving her a hard time, is another matter.

I really like your avatar Tedwalker.... what type of tree is it, do you know?

Re the Tree Muss-- Maybe Flame / Firewheel --?   thought it might have been a Poinciana,  however the wrong shape for that -- I think Flame Tree but can't see the leaves.

Apparently Nova Peris has approached the AFL and recently met AFL executives about the vacant job of senior adviser for indigenous and multicultural affairs. The vacancy at the AFL has been created by Jason Mifsud's appointment by the Andrews Government as the executive director of Aboriginal affairs in the Victorian office of premier and cabinet.

Re Illawarra Flame trees ... just beautiful. Look similar to Tedwalker's tree to me.

Thank you both PlanB and RnR for the Flame tree information, much appreciated.

Have seen them around but never knew what they were.... I'm not very good with trees and plants, but I am learning (never too old for that).

RnR

Thanks for that article about Mifsud.  Mifsud seems to have done a rather good job, quietly but with confidence and strength.  Hope that Peris can match that commitment, confidence and strength... it will be doubly hard for her, given her gender.  Good Luck to her.

Hi Mussitate.

Perhaps you're right about Nova Peris's reasons for  overshadowing the resentment. I have no doubt about her sincerity.

Thank you for admiring my avatar.

I see PlanB and RnR have already answered your question about the type of tree, so just for the record:

Yes, it is an Illawarra flame tree.

It's native to the east coast of Australia ( Wikipedia), but seems to have migrated to various parts of the world.

When in full bloom, it has no leaves, only flowers.

The one on my avatar is growing at Garden City shopping centre, at Mt Gravatt in Brisbane.

I took the picture on my mobile phone about 6 months ago.

I have one in my garden -- The Flame Tree

Well Nova didn’t get the AFL job … Tanya Hosch has been selected ahead of Nova Peris as the AFL's new head of inclusion and social policy.

http://www.abc.net.au/news/2016-06-22/tanya-hosch-named-afls-new-diversity-chief-ahead-of-nova-peris/7532636

Ain't that strange? So that must mean they found Tanya Hosch to be more inclusive and having a better grasp of social policy? But it doesnt explain why Nova told us about her trophy before she actually won the race? Who promised Nova the job and why?

Wonder if anyone promised the job at all. Most companies advertise and then choose the successful applicant after consultation I would have thought (despite the old mate 'networking' scenarios).

From what I could gather she approached them, not the other way round. I might be totally wrong of course.

Wish I'd had a job for every person who said, 'You really fit this role'.

Yeh right ... so do many others.

Nova was a good sportperson but maybe there are others who are more qualified for the job she was seeking.

Look at Cathy Freeman, another great sportsperson and yet she was hopeless at sport commentating.

Many ex runners, swimmers etc know nothing other than their sport and are at a loss at what to do when the time comes to give it up.  Having qualfications and/or a good education  to fall back on is a good thing and reading the biographies online of both of these ladies shows that this was not something either really had.

Nova has been quoted as saying that she thinks a good education is more important than sport and this is something she wants for her own children.
