Pre packaged food

Doing some research into which are the best prepackaged food (healthwise and tasty)currently available...ones that are ok to have in your freezer when you dont feel like cooking.  It looks as though Woolworths meals are not bad at all.

I usually buy a handful of  extra prawns and with a salad have wo meals out of it.

Roast chicken breast goes well in Thai Green Chicken Curry

Best to buy them on special for $4 and then you have them on hand when he does not want to cook :)

Suze, Coles have Weight Watchers meals on half price at moment $2.75 I think from memory.  Bought two yesterday.  Like you I always add to any meals I buy...pad them out a bit.   I also use a Coles BBQ chicken chopped up and add a can of Kantong Sweet andSour with Pineapple.  Add extras to that as well...capsicum, chilis, celery, fresh carrot and sprinkle toasted cashew nuts on top.  Hubby loves this.

I am going to try the WW ones as well. ...the ones you have pictured.   I have had two of their large lasagna $16.50 each and very nice.  1.6 kg...too big for us two but I freeze leftovers and have later.  That particular meal is not frozen when you purchase it.

Thanks Radish. Will keep an eye out for them. Sound excellent re nutrition, calories and salt levels.

Often get Woolies prepared meals. Most taste fine to me and living alone, just can't make them for the price, and some I like don't freeze well if I make a batch.

Don't mind Lean Cuisine if I'm desperate, but must admit, made a batch of my home made Thai Green Chicken Curry last week ... ate it over four nights. Bliss!!

Heaps of chicken, veg, garlic, ginger, full bunch coriander, coconut cream, etc etc.

R-n-R when you go to Woolies go to the section they call MEALS...they are not frozen in that area.  That is where I buy their own brand lasanga...there are a few and it can be confusing but the one we like is 1.6kg size $16.50 but as I said above one you cook it and use what you want ...then freeze into one person size portions.  It says on the packet that you cannot re cook but that is just to cover themselves.  It is perfectly fine in my book to freeze the left overs.  You should get at least another four meals out of it for yourself.  Cheaper than buying one packaged meal for one person.  I always reheat in my mini over with a foil covering over the lasagna (on a plate of course ) lol.  You can do in the microwave but I think it tastes better doing it on a reheat setting if you have one.

The other packaged ones (Suze has put up the photos) they are in the frozen meals section.

Tried that one Radish and it is definitely very nice ... it was on special for $5 ...think they put it out for one of their relatives as it was the only one at that price.

You mean the lasagna Suze??   If so yes it is nice.  I got the first one free because I am a woolies tester but have purchased it again because we liked it.  Hubby is not really a pasta person but he does enjoy that..men!! LOL

Thanks Radish, the MEALS section is where I get the single portion ones, first two in my pic above, not frozen. Will keep an eye out for the lasagne.

I was expecting to hear how bad they are, fresh is best I say, no proof the nutritional content is still intact in frozen.

You can get number of varieties that are prepared and not frozen ... they do have the nutrtional panel on them.

Many households cook meals up and freeze them so I dispute the fact that the nutritional value is  not as good as eating a fresh meal.

Frozen peas, beans etc are snap frozen very quickly and are just as nutritious as the fresh.  How long so called fresh food is on trucks, sitting around in veg shops before purchase;  no one would know.

"Fortunately for those who rely on convenient bags from the freezer aisle, studies suggest frozen veggies have just as many nutrients (if not more) as their freshcounterparts . Fresh fruits and veggies produce enzymes (trypsin and chymotrypsin) that cause loss of color, flavor, and nutrients just after harvest."

Some are lucky enough to grow their own veg and cook immediately in a meal but those people are few and far between as I believe the majority of people buy their produce from vegetable outlets.

Interesting, Thank you all for that, I will check it all out.

I try and if I do not like ...I do not buy anymore

The tasty ones I buy when on special and freeze.

Saw the MB Delicious Nutritious meals in the frozen section of my local Woolies today and bought two to try, Asian-style Chicken and Salmon Fish Cakes … couldn’t reach the rest.

They were way up on the highest shelf and marked down.

Hope that doesn’t mean they’re on the way out already.

The vertically challenged are only allowed 2 boxes each I believe

something to do with th fact that they need less calories :)

:) You cheeky bugger Raphael.

Just learnt something about your namesake and Easter.

Raphael's premature death on Good Friday 6 April 1520, which was possibly his 37th birthday, was due to unclear causes, with several possibilities raised by historians. Vasari also says that Raphael had also been born on a Good Friday, which in 1483 fell on March 28.

Watch yourself, I sayeth … Easter Sunday tomorrow … you may expire due to ‘unclear causes’.

No worries

if I do meet an untimely death, I shall rise again

perhaps not on the 3rd day . I could do with a long holiday

this Jesus business is too much hard work

LOL Raphael.

HEY HEY RAPHAEL,    whats with the short people jokes?   i am 4ft 11,    and i DO have trouble reaching  things in these shelves,    usualy some nice man will come to my rescue,     [wish i was younger],lol,

How do you get to be a Woolworths tester ???

good one radish,   ll,

have sent you a PM

Must admit I buy loads of frozen food - have two freezers - sved thousands over the years I reckon as buy on special etc. I live 30k's from town. Only small shops closer.

Love Sealord Hoki - do 2 large fillets of fish - as well as Birds Eye Hoki fish fingers, and Coles Hoki fillets all frozen.

I have used frozen veggies for years - reckon just as good as long as dont over boil them etc. As already said snap frozen - although used to grab fresh from local farmers market but last few years cant park close enough one disabled space close always full etc. So been buying Coles Online.

I lost 29kg over 18 months by changing diet to mainly fish, chicken and turkey. With frozen veggies for dinner and no potato at all - due to finding out it being one of the deadly nightshade family - bad for arthritis - withn 3 weeks of cutting it out - fingers were straight and I could make a fist which was beyond me and hard as dropped stuff as well as painful.  Tomato also out but I do eat tomato soup now and then as well as sardines in tomato or makeral etc with no sign of it affecting hands. Lunch is one slice of grain seed bread with thin sliced turkey or ham and fruit and breakfast is Carmens Museli with nuts and sultana's for sweetness blended or her porridge with sultanas and a bit of maple syrup which seems to be OK and I do have a treat once amonth - ice cream and Nanna's apple blackberry pie or rhubarb and apple 1/3 - he has rest ha ha.

Worked when couldnt hardly walk too. Stomach shrinks over time and now still sticking to this and find enjoy my food a lot more than ever did before.  And still not putting it back on - thankfully.

Crept up on me when I gave up smoking 1994 and didnt eat healthy.

Anyway losing weight from above was a bit of any eyeopener for me - as tried many diets over time never seemed to work for me. Or put it back on............:{

I like the Sealord products as well BigB and purchased some of the hoki recently...yet to try.

thanks val.
