Query on Age pension if assessed as legally blind

My cousin, who is legally blind, has become the beneficiary of a Will whereby she will receive a respectable amount of money.

Does she have to report this lump sum or, as she is legally blind, is this not required.

I did read on a Centrelink site that "We don't use the Income Test if you're permanently blind and get Age Pension".

Could you please clarify the position for her please.

HI bawbes,     she would need to ask centerlink,   but i dont see how being blind would make any difference,     it is still extra money,    my advice would be not to tell them,   BUT ,    if on a pension they can access your bankbook,    it would depend on how much is involved,    maybe put it into a trusted other account,       and say nothing,

With advice like yours it’s not surprising so many old women end up behind bars. Serious offence telling someone to defraud Centrelink.

Needs to be reported within 14 days of receiving the inheritance. However, it is only used for Income Test not Asset Test, the latter is given 12 months for you to decide what to do with the money. Read the bloody rules!

Blind or legally blind wre assessed differently. This may have changed. Contact Blind Citizens Australia.

Maybe you should read them Arvo, before having your say

Needs to tell them, won't affect the Blind Age pension, but is assessable for Aged Care Fees etc.

Bawbs,

There is a difference between "legally blind" and "permanently blind." You should most certainly check with centrelink.

In the meantime having a read here might help..

If you are legally blind how could you see what you got to tell them anyway?
