Re contemplating marriage.

I am considering marrying again, however am worried about the financial implications involved with Centrelink. I realise that I will be taken off the single OAP and placed on the partner rate when married however my wife to be is substantially younger than me and as a prospective migrant is not entitled to centrelink benefits. She is a school teacher at present,  I intend to provide support for any course to assist her with employment here. It is expected that she will obtain casual work during her study period. I have looked at the Centrelink site but am unable to find the amount she is able to earn before my partner rate for the OAP is affected, can anybody assist me, thank you.

I could live with you and we would both get a single rate of OAP, But heaven forbid if i was to marry you then we would get reduced penshion each ,and if you were working i would get even less and you would have to pay for everything,  would you do that for me ahhahah.

Lets put it this way, If i was to move in with you and live with you as a friend is that defrauding the government? But in migration situations you cant live with a friend they dont give out friend visas,  you need a reason to get an Australian visa, older people can only get a partner visa, then you are a partner if granted that visa.So ibous did not tell us enough about his situation, I think work visa is only up to age 29,and then you have to go back anyway.  but perment visa's are for partners and marriage,so he would have to tell c/l anyway. c/l and immi are intouch every day now.  I wish he would come back on here and explain a bit more.

You are right that two friends living together etc and claiming single pension each is ok. We are talking about two people in a relationship living together, married or not, they are partnered and should only be getting partnered rate of OAP. The Visa issue is not relevant to this conversation as they are in a relationship, married or not.

Hmmm ok, I give in.You win.The real question he was asking is just how much she can earn before it affects his oap, The answer is $300,  we both have become a bit side tracked here.  Good luck to you Mcdaddy.

From what i can see he had no mention of defrauding the government.  any way nice to chat.

Not until you suggested it.

No ,i did not.  he sais he was thinking of getting married, i suggested staying single and just living with her., as friends. she could work and he gets his full oap,  even you said friends can live together nothing rong with that.thats not defrauding any one.Why marry if you dont have to.?  Thats just being smart if you ask me.Looking out for your best interests.Even malcolm  would tell you that.  But i'll let you have the last say.Way you go .

"as friends. she could work and he gets his full oap,  even you said friends can live together nothing rong with that.thats not defrauding any one"

"i suggested staying single and just living with her., as friends."

He is talking about marrying her, you are telling him to live together as friends, what are you not getting about this? So all married couples who are on OAP should divorce and live together as friends? Do you see what you are suggesting yet?

He's suggesting a life of sin. Non kosher. On the other hand, he's giving me ideas about separate houses!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks all for your comments, I notice a figure of $300 per week mentioned above however I have no idea as to how this figure was reached the first answer received by me stated by centrelink that your partner could earn $964.00 per fortnight before it affected your pension then your pension would be reduced by 60 cents in the Dollar.

I have taken the plunge and married the lass, all going well, she started part time work last week,  we play tennis, she helps with the crayfish pots down here in Tas during the season, pulling in the fishing nets when we go boating, a great housekeeper and stunning to boot.

I note the comment above "there's no fool like an old fool" well in that case speak for yourself not me.

In previous relationships and there has been several I have had several baggage carriers with major problems with some of their kids, thankfully that is now behind me. The joys of being a Hotel Publican no doubt is the reason for most of the past relationships.

Footnote, I have notified Centre link for those who showed concern.

Good on you hope all goes well. THe figure of $300/ftn is accurate the other is a figure for New Start Allowance not the Age Pension. If you were to do any part time work, your first $250/ftn is not counted due to the "Work Bonus" Cheers.

Hi iboaus, not getting into the Centrelink debate, just wanted to say...

Jest pullin ya leg Iboaus.

Good on you iboaus, Us Tasmanian always do the right thing. Yes she can earn $300 a F/NIGHT,before it will affect your oap, then after that they take 25c in the dollar off you.thats a quater, So the way to work it out is, IF she earns say $2000 gross a f/n then she is 1700 over so a quater of 1700 is 425 so you will loose $425 of your oap. That means you should get about $250 a f/n.   So if you don't have any other form of income then SHE will be paying all the bills, you cant. And that is shocking because it causes conflict in the marriage even though they say it wont.  if you have other income well its ok because you have your own safty net to fall back on.  Every honest partnered Ausie is in the same boat.   My oppinion is that its not fair  IF the oap is all you have.    One other thing,  when dealing with C/L dont beleive anything they say.Every person you talk to will say something diffenant to you,and go in and see them face to face never over the phone.Cheers and good luck.

Come to your sences Iboaus and she moves in as your house keeper / carer and say nothing to anyone.

Thanks Leonie your wishes appreciated, Tom managed so far to avoid incarceration don't wish to start now, thanks for the advice from all.
