If your entering via Heathrow airport, and you decide to spend some time in a London Hotel, you could consider a hotel in Paddington such as The Westpoint http://www.westpointhotel.com/

I have stayed there and it was quite good, a bit north of Hyde Park. There are plenty to chose from.

Paddington is the end/start terminal for the Heathrow Express, good value especially if your arriving a bit later in the day; 20 min or so versus an hour or more on the tube. Peak hour from Heathrow on the tube with luggage is no fun at all.
