Secret to oldest man's long life?

The world’s oldest man died at the age of 113 at his home in Ashoro, Japan, yesterday, passing away peacefully while sleeping. And the secret to Masazo Nonaka’s long life?

A stress-free lifestyle, says his family.

Nonaka grew up in a large family and succeeded his parents running a 106-year-old hot springs inn, now managed by granddaughter Yuko Nonaka. He outlived all of his seven siblings, his wife and three of their five children.

Nonaka was 40 when the US dropped the atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki at the end of World War II.

He enjoyed eating sweets, soaking in the springs, watching sumo wrestling on TV, reading newspapers and eating sweets and cakes, his family said. “He didn’t have any health problems... He went peacefully and that’s at least our consolation,” his granddaughter said.

The world’s oldest living person is Kane Tanaka, also from Japan. She celebrated her 116th birthday on 2 January.
