The benefits of eating hemp seeds

New national research shows over two million Australian adults are unlikely to ever benefit from one of the world’s most nutritious plant-based foods – hemp seeds – partly due to incorrect perceptions that the seeds can alter your state of mind.

Leading Australian nutritionist and chef Zoe Bingley-Pullin, released the survey results as part of an education campaign aimed at clearing up these common misconceptions and highlighting the nutritional benefits of edible hemp seed products.

Hemp foods are a favourite with the health conscious in many other parts of the world. However, most Australians are not aware that hemp is now available as a healthy, tasty and nutritious food, which does not contain the amount of THC chemical known to alter one’s state of mind and bodily function.

The national survey results highlight this confusion with nearly four in ten (39 per cent) Australian adults under the impression that hemp foods are the same as other baked goods containing illegal (THC containing) ingredients.

One in five Australians are also concerned about whether these foods are legally permitted to be sold and consumed in Australia.

Hemp seeds were acknowledged as a nutritious addition to a healthy diet by Food Standards Australia and New Zealand (FSANZ) when regulation changes came into effect allowing the sale of these low THC hemp seed foods in Australia from mid-November 2017.

For years, hemp seed foods have been a pantry staple for international consumers seeking healthy food options.

When added to a healthy diet, they offer a number of nutritional benefits. Hemp seeds are a good source of protein, they contain all three of the essential fatty acids (Omega 3, 6 and 9) needed for the human body to function and they also contain dietary fibre which can aid digestion.

Would you add hemp seeds to your diet or do you believe they can have mind-altering consequences?

Someone gave me a bottle of hemp seed oil as a present once. I did use it with no ill effects and unfortunately didn't get high! Haven't tried the actual seeds.

I would be willing to try them -- there used to be a shop in town that sold hemp clothing -- it was quite dear but gee it was nice and felt great on as well same as Bamboo clothing and sheets etc great stuff but a bit expensive

It once was used to lag water pipes in the winter to stop them freezing, I also worked at a rope making factory , where they made ropes with hemp

Making ropes out of hemp would sure be an improvement to making them out of plastic.

I remember the hemp ropes

That was in the U.K by the way

Oh yes, I eat them every day as I am vegetarian and the protein value is very welcome.  They are very tasty sprinkled on sweet and savoury foods and also on their own by the tablespoonful.  Delicious!!

I have the help oil daily and put the seeds on my yoghurt for breakfast.  I believe it boosts the immune system.  I've been feeling more alert since taking them and feel very healthy!

Did a search on price of hemp seeds.  Works at at $100 a kg....or $10 approx for 100 grams.

I wonder how many on here can afford that?

A read of this would suggest that flax seeds are pretty good too...I have been taking flax, sesame seeds and almond meal most days for years now.

PLAN B,    we have a smal shop in the local market that sells both HEMP,   and BAMBOO clothing,   it is quite expensive compared with normal cotton or linen,   but does feel nice,   and wears well,     i have bought a couple of things there,    and good value,

Yes I too must agree that the products are quite expensive.

I always buy 1000 plus thread count but after reading this may have to look into further

The ABC had a segment a few nights ago on thread count.  It sounds like a bit of a con...

A thread count of around 400 sounds about ideal to me.

The only bamboo in a bamboo pillow is in the pillow slip...the rest is just shredded foam.

Cats I have bought some underwear -- hey sell them at the chemist made from the Bamboo and also bought my Son some Bamboo and cotton socks --they were at Target 2 pairs for $12 only in black though.   Have not seen hemp clothing for years now -- but like you say they are quite dear.

I have been eating hemp seeds for a few years now and they are very good and nutritious. They come from my old home province, Manitoba, in Canada.  I put two or three teaspoons on top of my cereal or yogurt and even eat them by themselves as they have a good, nutty taste. They really are good and healthy and totally legal. They sell them in Costco here and they cost around A$15 for a packet of 800 grams, so they are not that expensive. Try them and am sure you will enjoy them.

I always have a good giggle about it when something gets touted as the next best thing that is sooo good for you. Unfortunately 400 yrs behind the eightball nothing new about this at all.

When they grew hemp for rope and cloth one of the most profitable byproducts was the seed. This was pressed for the hempoil.

Hemp has a amale and a female plant one is used for rope and the other on for cloth.

Where do you buy these hemp seeds?

At Costco. They are called HEMP HEARTS, Manitoba Harvest. You can check it out on Internet as well.

Don't have Costco here they are only in Cities and you have to pay to shop there

Where can you buy hemp seeds in Australia?

From what I've read hemp seeds seem to have high nutritional value. However the seeds lack any clinical research into their numerous health claims, so my personal opinion is go easy on them until a lot more is known.Like all seeds, it's a good idea to drink lots of water during the day if you are going to consume them or a bowel problem could arise.
