Time Unions were taxed

Trade union hypocrisy in decrying corporate tax minimisation

Sally McManus’s stirring Bolshevik call to arms at the National Press Club on March 29 decried the injustices of corporate tax minimisation schemes.

“Inequality in our country is the worst it has been for 70 years and 679 of our biggest corporations pay not one cent of tax,” the ACTU president said.

“We are here to fix the imbalance that has eroded people’s rights and wrongly empowers corporations, big business and the already wealthy.”

But PEAT is expresing the truth, even though it might be said a trifle more graciously!

One thing we dont seem to have in focus, the Unions. They rip money off unwilling employees who are intimidated by their thuggish behaviours, and then pay their execs (and political subjects) the millions they take. Extraordinary that they get away with it in a democracy, dont you think?

good point observer

Yes

a lot of low paid workers are pressured and bullied into joining the union

The Union fees paid from an employees pocket are already taxed.

At times I had to pay fees to unions and this was when working for State government.

I offered and stayed on duty to hold the fort when the rest went to a funeral.

I was called scab....arseholes

That's awful Herb

You were only trying to be a good public servant

You would know, peat, all about bludging

Now was that necessary

And here I was trying to have a decent conversation with you

by the way , who is "peat"

The nutter does not know who he is .....multi names seems to make him crazey.

Who is this masked man you speak of ?

Actually, you are obviously not a lover of fine whisky, Herb. The highest quality Highland Scotch whiskys' originate in the waters of the peat 'tarns' that give that style of whisky its legendary and highly sought after flavours. The one I particularly favour is called Octomore. It's label says it is 'heavily peated', and it sells typically for around AU$400 per bottle. If you can find it! Elixir of the gods....

But no Unions have anything to do with it, thank goodness.

And at risk of being tedious with repitition, why do we not tax Unions?

I had a bottle of scotch given to me from my daughter last night.

Chivas Regal Extra 40%

The money that unions get is already taxed.

 Herb

Unions charge different fees based on your wage level and the industry you work in. An average full-time salary earner will pay around $10 per week, but this does vary. The fees that apply to your membership will be explained to you during the joining process. Union fees are fully tax deductible and you will either receive a statement at the end of the financial year, or can use your credit card or debit account statements when filing your tax return.

Moeny spent on other corporations are not similarly tax deductible and those corporations pay taxes as well

Herb, the money that I pay for my groceries etc etc is also already taxed. But we would not expect Coles to pay no tax on the profit they make on my purchases, would we?

The Unions on the other hand, make 'rivers of gold' especially on the compulsory super payments that contributors and employers make, but also from the membership fees that they impose.

And it is surely ridiculous that the (the unions) pay no tax, is it not?

Observer you are 100% correct

And union fees are fully tax deductible

Yes, Im aware of that Raphael, but it does influence Herb's view that he perceives that membership fees are paid in post tax dollars. Insofar as they are tax deductable, his view is also incorrect as you are indicating.

However, the tax on super funds, and a range of other union income souces such as 'education fees'  is somewhat more complex. In general the 'rivers of gold' are untaxed in the hands of the unions. And that is unjustifiable surely? The ever diminishing membership and associated membership fees are not the main source of union income, far from it.

The "rivers of gold" as you put it goes towards huge salaries and benefits of union management and to the labor party

Not to mention the rorting on credit card expenses, travel and other underhanded stuff

Yep. This needs to be squashed once and for all.

I cant believe we Australians are letting the Unions get away with this standover thuggery and theft!
