What Energy Company are you with?

What Electric Company are you with please -- and are you happy with them -- do you get a discount etc?

I was with Energy Australia and then suddenly two years ago I got a huge bill from them. So I switched to AGL and was happy until suddenly last month I got a huge bill from them. I just can't win nowadays. I'm in NSW. After many weeks of arguing a kind young man said if I paid $329 (l rounded the cents) upfront I could go back to $40 a fortnight electricity bill smoothing under a special plan for low income people who really struggle, because I am a disability pensioner and have no assets, not even a house. I pay $10 a fortnight bill smoothing for gas. They were going to hike my electricity up to about $2400 a year!!!! I live alone. But as soon as I moved into this small house from a tiny flat 6 years my bills went up and keep going up.

ORIGIN

Exceelent company

best value

ethical

socially responsible

Ethical, tell me more. Are they supporting more coal or renewables?

i was with AGL,    and had high bills,     i changed to ORIGIN about 18 months ago,   they are twice as high,    ok for you RAPHIE,    you have probably got shares,   but they are doing me no favours,      im going to have to scout around for someone else,      origin have been outrageous,

I have been with energy Aust -- was happy enough -- but had a bloke come around from Red energy -- and have signed up with them as they are an Aussie company -- most others are foreign owned -- so will give Red a go -- I am not on a plan so will see how it goes he said based on my last EA bill the Red should be at least $25 cheaper

Be careful. You might be in for higher bills down the line. If you are happy with Energy Australia, why not stick with them? I don't trust any of the energy companies.

I have been with Red Energy for electricity for years and for gas just recently. I moved from Origin, my original gas supplier as I had no choice at the time.  I have a payment card for each type of energy and I pay an amount of my choosing every fortnight. I rarely have to pay anything when a bill comes in and always able to claim the pay on time bonus. When a bill is has an amount owing I am able to move money from say electricity to gas to cover the amount before the due date.

I have tried comparison companies to find a better deal but they keep bombarding me with phone calls when I haven't found anything better than what I receive now. Those companies have had their phone number blocked.

All same dogs with different collars!

Not necessarily Alexia. Some energy providers like Origin are ASX listed and others like Ergon are controlled by state government. There is a huge difference there. Especially if the state government decides to jack up prices in order to redirect cash flow. I think this happened with Ergon. The state government used some Public Service Super to clear some debt and is repaying that from increased power supply revenue.

I've been with Origin Energy for about 10 years now.

My electricity bills were low at the beginning and they are still low.

I just found an old bill from 3 years ago. The charges were;  off peak 26.44 cents per kwh, and peak 10.26 cents per kwh. The charges for my "current" bill are; off peak 24.20 cents per kwh, and peak 11.70 cents per kwh.

So, over a 3 year period my off peak charges have gone DOWN by 2.24 cents per kwh, and my peak charges have gone up by 1.44 cents per kwh. Therefore, my overall electricity charges have gone DOWN.

I'm a single, age pensioner living alone in my own house (no mortgage or rent). My 3 monthly electricity bills rarely go over $190, and from memory the biggest bill I've ever had with Origin was about $250 years ago. My current bill is for $203. I also get a pensioner discount from the total bill. Also, my Origin Energy "supply" charges have gone down by just over $12 per 3 monthly bill, over the last 3 year period.

I can easily manange electricity bills on the age pension (I never have a thousand lights on at once and never run heating and air conditioning 24 hours a day like some folks). I live in a large country town.

Interesting Jim B.

I'm with Origin also ... for electricity, in SE Queensland.

Your post prompted me to check my charges. Seems the Peak charges have gone down overall but the Supply charges overall are up/down according to my billing record over the last 3 years.

----------------------------

19 Oct 13 - 17 Jan 14 Peak Usage 26.73 c/kWh Supply Charge 0.502 c/Day

13 Apr 16 - 30 Jun 16 Peak Usage 22.238 c/kWh Supply Charge 116.398 c/Day

7 Apr 17 - 30 Jun 17 Peak Usage 23.26 c/kWh Supply Charge 116.47 c/Day

1 Jul 17 - 7 Jul 17 Peak Usage 24.51 c/kWh Supply Charge 114.19 c/Day

As a kid brought up on a farm and not having any electricity until my first year of high school ... I never begrudge a power bill. Wonderful service ... beats the hell out of flat irons on the wood stove/or meals after wood chopping; kerosene fridges and washing by hand.

I wrote my peak and off peak charges back to front. Peak is the higher charge and off peak is the lower charge.

Red energy and very happy with them plus 10% discount if you pay when the bill arrives.

Usually about $200 in winter and a credit in the summer with the solar working harder.

The gas comes by tanker about $120 per fill 4 times a year.

always been with energy australia, have had times, of irregular, power bills. though, i've spoken to them rationally about the differences, they have always, corrected them for me, i'm a temperate sort of guy, avoid arguments, and short fuses, compared to some people I know, makes a world of difference, when both sides, can listen to each other, being negative, is just a good chance, to get you nowhere, cheers, billy ;)

We are with Lumo. We get 33% for pay on time which they take off the whole bill unlike some who just deduct from useage. We recently asked them for a better deal and they did it. You must keep asking every six months to improve your deal. 20% off for gas pay on time as well. We keep comparing but no one is matching this. We have low, high and shoulder rates for electricity. We recently got solar and that is starting to kick in as well. Last bill before solar was $50 for one month. It will be interesting to see the impact of solar.

We have been with Origin and Red but this mob are far cheaper.

33% off what? Means nothing to me at all.

The only way to find out if another supplier is cheaper or more expensive is download their critical information sheets and work out your bill on each of them. I have found may offerring high percentages off are infact more expensive than others.

Totally agree with you there. With Red Energy I get 12% off the total bill for Electricity & 10% off Gas. I have checked others but their rates are higher without the discounts.

Didn’t realise that Lumo and Red Energy are both owned by Snowy Hydro.

Just compared my provider Origin (as per bill) with Lumo's standing offer for my postcode:

Origin:1 Jul 2017 Peak Usage 24.51 c/kWh, Supply Charge 114.19 c/Day
Lumo: 1 Jul 2017    All Usage 25.05 c/kWh, Supply Charge 99.94 c/Day

The Lumo/Red Energy discounts sound good.

I did the calculations with Lumo (direct debit & ebilling only) /Red Energy (payment options/paper bill)

Red was cheaper on gas with their pay on time discount.

Lumo was cheaper on electricity with their pay on time discount.

At least in the Eastern States you seem to have options. Here in WA we have one supplier (though the country users have the same provider under a different name).  Our bills just keep going up!

At least with gas, a second provider was allowed to enter the scene and does give good discount,. But when the original sole gas supplier hears about your possible swap, they offer a slightly bigger discount, which lasts for 6 months and then theyare back to normal (know this because son tried and then did the swap to the second provider).

Now we have a 3rd provider coming in with promises of much more, but yet to see people happy with them.

Funnily enough all the gas comes from the same couple of places!

I am with Powershop, not sure if I am getting a good deal, but I like how I can buy my power ahead of time and buy when the specials are on. I am getting lower than Powershops base rates, not sure how to work it out but this is what is currently on my account:

All day usage: 31.94 c/kWh Compared to Base rate of 38.95 c/kWh

Dedicated circuit: 19.75 c/kWh Base Rate 24.09

Daily supply: 146.94 Base 179.20

Not sure how daily supply charge is factored in but you just buy your power as you go.
