What to do with your old, worn out beauty products

If you’re a woman with a love of makeup, chances are you have a pretty hefty stash of expired or half-finished beauty products lying around. But what to do with your crusty mascaras, cracked foundations, gluggy nail polishes and lipstick stubs? Short of turfing them into landfill, there’s TerraCycle.

TerraCycle is a company that has joined forces with L’Oreal Australia to create a free makeup recycling solution, called the Beauty Products Recycling Program.

All you need to do is collect your worn out beauty products (any brand is allowed), put them in a box, download a shipping label from the TerraCycle website and send it along for recycling for free. This is the first time cosmetic waste is able to be recycled in Australia.

Additionally, for every item you recycle, you get to allocate 2 cents to your favourite school or charity.

I say 'Stick 'em in the bin".

Before you do Hola, can I have a look at your chuckouts

I need a change and you never know you just may have something I like...and I get my two cents worth...lol

Hi Hola.

I agree with you, so many skin issues and eye infections are caused by old make up and mascara.

Cranky - To tell you the truth, I have never worn make up, only lipstick. I have olive skin and I

don't think I need it. People think I am wearing some, but no, it's all me. A ravishing beauty.

And how lovely you are too Hola, :) my skin is that of an English Rose, and needs constantly protecting from the harsh sun, so it's lavished in moisturising equipment, but I am an old rocker who adores eye makeup, but never worn lipstick..

So I guess I miss out on a rummage sale.lolol

Hola you're a tonic lol...and I'm sure you are a "ravishing beauty"...

Like you...I don't wear make-up but ever try to take my lipstick away and WW3 is declared!!

As for recycling old makeup...I'm not sure I like the sound of that...

Actually they re-cycle lots of things, not only make-up and it's free to send a lot of things to  them.

They even take used cigarette butts to my amazement.  Not that they would get any from me.

Read about it here

We are fortunate in our Council area, as they re-cycle lots of things that other councils don't.

Good heavens Sandi, you learn something everyday don't you?...

No fag buts from me and no wine bottle corks either.

I'm pretty boring..lol

Cranky that's a great pity.

Not about the ciggy butts but about the wine corks.  I am currently trying to get enough wine corks to make a few craft bits and could have used them.

Anyone who has any they don't want give me a PM.  Don't want the bottles just the corks !!  I have enough wine here to drink already.

Unfortunately they don't all come with corks these days.

Be lucky to still find a wine cork these days. Most are screw caps now. Well those not in a carboard box anyway.....

Sandi (SA) -  I have a friend who also collects corks. She goes around to the different restaurants and wine bars and asks them for any unwanted corks. She has managed to save quite a few.

Do they recycle old Xrays anywhere?

Now if you had asked me that question a few years ago Phyl,  I would have volunteered to take them from you.

I used to use old x-rays for detailing when I was making new statue casings.

Phyl.. Go to Planet Ark's recycling near you site, select X-ray Films from the product list, and put in your postcode. They'll list the places closest to you, as well as one company you can post smaller quantities of films.

I THINK they do Phyl -- I was told they get silver out of the X-Rays   --- they no longer print them these days the Dr looks at them on line.

Thank you kindly Sandi., Cranky and P.B.

I think from 95, they need to get out from under the bed as they are filling up ALL the space lol.

Phyl I know where you are coming from -- I have manny too

AS far as beauty products come from I use mine till they are used up and chuck what are left,  I would not use what other people have used

Sandi

you can buy corks relatively cheaply on eBay ... pending how many you need
