Why you should resolve to make your will this year

A timely advertorial from YLC on estate planning and the benefits of getting your ducks in a row with a will and other estate planning documents. My father passed away in 2021 and sorting his affairs was as easy as could be imagined in the circumstances. He had:

- a current will with my brother as executor in his safe and broadly informed the family of its contents

- prepaid and arranged his funeral

- put aside cash to help my brother travel to WA, cover other funeral expenses, suits and wake

- tax documents

- a book with all of his contacts for DVA, carers, cleaners etc

- a whiteboard with appointments to cancel

You might have thought this would inspire my mother to sort her affairs but know, just like everything else she procrastinates and actively avoids it. She is a belligerent 82 and still refuses to sort her pension out because she does not like the way Centrelink asks her questions yet grizzles about having spent much of her savings. I have arranged appointments with solicitors that have not been followed up, arranged online wills, provided her with a will form but to no avail.

So YLC, how about an article on how to persuade a senior to get over the line and resolve her will?

My Sister and husband are in their late 70's and have not made any Wills. I told her to go to the Public Trustees and have them made out for free. But husband refuses to talk about it. I don't get it.
