Elderly living in poverty on Newstart $248/week

Can anyone tell me how a widow in her 60s who cannot find work in a large rural city (where even young people find it difficult to get a job), can survive on $248/week Newstart/Widows Allowance?  Rates, electricity, water, insurance, phone and car rego use most of this $248 leaving us older single Aussies with no money for food, medical/dental expenses, clothes, petrol, white-goods replacement, house or car maintenance and repairs!

Single pensioners receive a little more money than pensioner couples but the same rule is not applied to the thousands of 60 - 65s who have no hope of ever getting another job and are on Newstart/Widows Allowance.  Those paying rent receive Rent Assistance while we who struggled for 30 years or more to pay off our own home get no help with ever-increasing Council Rates, insurance and home maintenance (which requires paying a handyman to do after a woman is widowed)!

Why have we been forgotten and ignored?

A lot of people who paid super during their working lives, lost it when insurance companies went broke. Now Tony Abbot wants to cut super payments doesn't he?If you were lucky enough to cash your super in at a good time, congratulations. To anyone else, never be complacent.

Mandatory super started 1990.
@ Jaywalker
And you were lucky being public servants, as many who had paid into pension funds with private companies found out when lost their jobs due to closure, their pension funds had zero balance. Just as some since mandatory super started also havent had theirs paid into by the employers and these are in fact in place of rises but still they get them which is why average wage so high today.

And of course everyone who paid income taxes to today has paid the levy of 7.5% towards their age pension, now being paid into the General Revenue Account in place of the Pension Fund which Menzies closed in 1950 but he didnt stop the levy just sent it on to make sure the monies kept rolling in.

Now MPs duck and dive still but ex Treasury men say still being collected but now being spent of anything rather than pensions whilst the pension is tagged into welfare budget.

But for last decades those lefties on the internet forums have struggled to defend the actions of that liberal man saying it has stopped but failed to find evidence because of course no government ever stops taking income taxes and anyway proof of it starting which is latest tool in the denial is that the UK who started their age pension payments towards tax with same levy still get it today too even though changed in 1948 into part of the National Health Stamps without which no one can work or if do pay emergency tax which is heaps higher.

And any person reading this who worked for 6 years in the UK or near to 6, can pay the difference to make it 6 years and draw their pension there in ratio, but contact British Pensioners in Australia as they are changing things and good chance also of indexation now due to work done by this and other organizations due to $20 a year membership fees being used to fight.

Gerry :)

I agree because not game enough to disagree - just too much for me - definitely an argument stopper

Another inane comment from Jaguar, probably followed by comments of support by his many alia,s,Surfer you wanna go first?

Big Val , are you saying that I as a working tourist for seven years can now claim a UK pension, more details please?

Mandatory super is a con.

Can't you ever give up Jaguar???

Balanced or unbalanced? You choose the latter.

i choose the path of the righteous . And I'm not even christian. Go figure.

Btw its Xmas. Your god is watching

Moorlands to get the part British Pension depends on the number of years you were paying National Insurance, I get part pension from England but I am also British born but I think it depends on National Insurance, how many years paid, you can also pay the missing number of years to bring it higher. This site will tell you eligibility but you need to know or at least it helps to know your National Insurance No.

Means test the family home and there would be more money for those who REALLY need welfare.

Those people living in million dollar homes who wont sell them, cant afford the upkeep but hang on like grim death just so they can get the pension and concessions.

Personally know of three people like this.  One a widow living in a two story home overlooking beach worth 2.2m   Wants to downsize but wont for the reasons I just gave.

Yes Radish,  it is really shocking the way that cash poor widows who bought a home with their new husbands 50 or 60 years ago & have lived there all their lives, don't want to sell it in order to look after the poor.  Bloody thoughtless & greedy old women.  Her husband probably even paid taxes too.  You have got to wonder about the way that these people think.  They actually put the effort into buying a well located home & raise their family there, paid taxes all their lives & have the audacity to expect a pension.

No, no, no.   This is not the case re the widow.  Her husband was a Cathay Pacific pilot and they specifically BUILT this home just before he retired  to enable them to get the pension.  It was NOT the family home at all.

They were advised by their financial advisor that this is the way to get the pension and entitlements.

This woman does not want to stay living in this house it is too big for her the outgoings are too much and she is living on the smell of an oily rag.

If she sold the house and bought a smaller one she would still have over a million dollars on which she could get income and at 75 years of age it will well and truly be enough to see her out.

I see nothing at all wrong with this whatsoever and she would be a lot happier elsewhere.   It is the fear of losing the pension and entitlements...a lot of rubbish in my opinion as she could live very comfortably on the earnings from the money left over after selling and purchasing a smaller home.

And may I say that I am a fully self funded retiree who gets nothing from the government in any way shape or form but I am concerned for those who really need government help.

As for your sarcastic comments;   I also paid taxes and worked from the age of 15 but fully realise that the pension is NOT and entitlement any longer.  Those days are long gone.   It is there for those who are not as fortunate as the rest of us.  Hopefully those coming up now will have superannuation to cover them in their old age and not expect the government to do so
