Retirees to get $200 power bill rebate
Self-funded retirees in NSW will be able to get $200 off their power bills as part of a pre-election sweetener from the state government.
Premier Gladys Berejiklian on Monday said about 130,000 people 65 or older who hold a seniors' health card can apply for the annual rebate from July.
"We understand that energy costs are putting pressure on those with fixed incomes and this new policy will ensure that self-funded retirees receive the support they deserve," she said in a statement.
Pensioners and veterans already benefit from other government refunds including the $285 low income household rebate, but this new program will support self-funded retirees for the first time.
"This new program will ensure seniors across NSW who have worked hard for their retirement will have much-needed hip-pocket relief now too," Ageing Minister Tanya Davies said in a statement.
Do you think self-funded retirees need this energy relief? Should other states adopt this plan? Is this just a cynical ploy for votes?
The elderly pensioners should be getting this rebate, not the well to do SFR.
