why atheism ?

Religions have existed from before the recorded history of humankind. Those 'religions' were the work of the shamans and soothsayers and witches and charlatans. If you didnt believe or opposed you were put to death, in some horrible painful manner.
Much of christianity started off with violence against ones fellow man [old testament expecially]. christ was crucified in times when human life was rather cheap. Slavery was in vogue. People died for no reason other than the impulse of another. Yet societies still blossomed and prospered despite the deaths. The Romans controlled much of europe at the time and they had gods and rules to live by. Nevertheless mainstream Meditteranean religions competed. They fought to the death. For power and control of regions; trade and profit were an underlying theme.
Yet there were always those who, although afraid to disclose their fear and potential loss of life, did not believe in any religion. So in the early 2000,s there has emerged a worldwide movement, a movement of freedom of thinking, a movement of reason of thought, a movement of science, a movement of rationallity; that rejects all notions of deity worship.
Most fundamental theist followers are aghast at the notion. Their highly structured and controlled worlds [Jewish, Catholic, Islamic, Hindu, Scientology] are being challenged like never before. Books like 'The God Delusion' and the movie the 'Unbelievers' are in their face, questioning the very foundations of the moral rules handed down through ancient texts [except Scientology].
So what does the future hold for worldwide religions in the face of this radical new challenge ?
