Young farmer throws in the towel as milk prices are unsustainable

We all know the farmers in Australia are doing it tough, and the dairy farmers are no exception. The Treloar family have been left with no other option but to shut down their farm, with the average price per litre of milk sitting around $0.38.

Pointing to the $1 milk campaign by the supermarkets as a significant factor in the devaluing of milk, The Treloars along with the Daily Farmers Assosication of South Australia expressed concern about the sustainability of the dairy industry in Australia without significant changes going forward.

Do you buy $1 milk? Would you consider paying more for your milk to enable dairy farmers to continue producing Australian milk for our shelves?

In 1995 I helped administer a survey of dairy farmers for the Dairy Industry Research and Development Corporation, before dairy deregulation caused subsidies to be withdrawn.  The data obtained was used to help dairy farmers to understand what they had to do to get profitable, or get out of the industry.  Unfortunately many did not heed the advice, and now truggle to survive.

I will not support an industry that produces for the masses and is based on animal cruelty. Cows have to be pregnant to produce milk.  Cows have maternal instincts ane have to endure the pain of having as theiir calf is taken away from them for veal. Each dairy industry cow spends most of its life pregnant and having its offspring  torn away from it. Finally  the cow is slaughtered when it is no longer productive. Mother nature provided the cow's milk to feed its young not human adults. Dairy farmers make good money selling their dairy products to China. Cows get their calcium from the ground where the grass grows.

Interesting rant. Get on your bike (made in China) and go back to planet la la land.

perhaps we should milk humans instead

plenty of cuckoo's posting recently.

"Dairy farmers make good money selling their dairy products to China. Cows get their calcium from the ground where the grass grows.'

So does this mean its only Australian milk drinkers you are aiming your soapbox diatribe at and not the Chinese or indeed the dairy farmers who according to you "Dairy farmers make good money selling their dairy products to China".

All a bit inconsistent here so I am somewhat confused as to what your point is.

And FYI: Chinese company Xianfeng Lu - Moon Lake Investments already owns Australia's largest dairy farm. They bought it for $280m in 2016 after Mr Turnbull agreed the sale.

Jackie is absolutely right. My father walked off his dairy farm in the 1960s after a major drought, and when I was old enough to understand the appalling cruelty of the industry, I was grateful that he had done so. If farmers cannot make a profit by tormenting animals, then stop doing it - grow something profitable or plant trees to reduce our catastrophic carbon emissions.

And if you are not a baby cow, stop drinking a substance that is designed by nature to turn a 30kg calf into a 200kg cow or bull in a few months.

Lothario:  you just described yourself.  A real cuckoo!

Jackie:  "Dairy farmers make good money selling their dairy products to China."  The facts are otherwise.  Dairy Farmers have been screwed by Woolies and Coles and they cannot produce milk at the prices they are getting.  This is what happens when you have deregulation and we saw a similar thing happen when chickens went this way.

Farmers do not make good money selling their milk to China, which has itself bought up tens of hundreds of the most superb dairy farms and cut Australians out of the production chain.  The only one thing I would say is that farmers could easily convert their unprofitable dairy farms to producing meat.  Have you seen the outrageous price a kilo of meat fetches in the supermarkets?  Tells a story.

Thats right blame the Chinese for everything. You all have  mobile phones where do you think they are made?

What about your TV's electronic appliances, fridges, watches, tools, cars and automotive parts, the list goes on.

Its not just food its everything we buy. Don't be so hypocritcal. The Chinese also buy a lot from Australia, iron ore, coal,

sheep, wool. What goes around comes around. Without trading partners we would not survive.

And they also buy our most productive FREEHOLD farming land to produce food and export to China without a single dollar of the sale price being left in Australia.  Our farms are even available for purchase by governments (think China again).  Tell the complete story casey.  Whilst you are correct the above is not about trade but rather about (financial) conquest.  It will not do Australia one bit of good.....but the government cares not!

MICK, for the Chinese to buy they have to find an Australian who is willing to sell to them.  If you see a good deal you take it, whether you are Chinese, British or American.

Unless the government is willing to meet the Chinese price, what can they do that is fair to the farmer?  The retailers and the customers who insist on cheap milk are more to blame than most.

I do not mind paying a fair price for milk as I can easlily afford it and don't drink much anyway.  I would suggest that families under a certain income should be provided with vouchers dependant on how many children in the family everyone else should pay a reasonable price.  Most adults do not neeed milk in their diet anyway, we can get calcium in other ways.

Mick - you should be happy that its a communist country buying our land instead of the usual capitalist pigs lie the USA, UK or Japan

Soon you will have your socialist utopia right here in Oz

Coles used to have 2 litre milk for $2.50 (until late 2018), with 40 cents of that going to the farmers.  They no longer provide same. Why?  I purposely bought this milk in the belief that some of the money was going to the farmers.

i buy 'ocean road'   milk,   which i believe is australian owned ,   and quite happily pay the bit extra they charge,    i saw the news last week,   which showed  a farmer with dead and starving cattle,     broke my heart to see those animals,
